Looks like I will be the proud owner of a 375 Alaskan stainless in a month or so...

I had a Mdl 70 action I was going to build one on, but after so many good reviews, I just decided to get the factory one. It's got pretty much everythign I woudl have done to it already. We will see if I like the stock or not..

Now I just need some dies and brass. Who is making dies? Just Hornady?

Gatehouse,

If the Alaskan is as good as my African, you ARE going to love your new 375 Ruger! I may have to spring for an Alaskan too...

So far, Hornady is the only die supplier. My Hornady dies work just fine, though. Smiler

Do your Hornady dies have a threaded spindle in the resizing die?

I have an african model, and have only punched a few rounds through it with the open sites so far. Those few shots were offhand at about 40 yards, and everyone of them was inside 2" - it makes me pretty optimistic about what she will do now that she has glasses. I was a little concerned about the recoil, but it was fine. I actually felt it was less than my 338. I wish it had a little smoother action, but it is tolerable. You should be damn happy with yours.

They didn't have any when I called them recently. Midway says they sell other brands in 375 Ruger, but try to buy them. I expect there will be others in stock soon, however.

The Hornadys have the "zip spindle".

Yes. Just read the instructions with the dies after you have screwed them into the RCBS press.
I used my Hornady .375 Ruger dies in the RCBS AmmoMaster. The Zipwidget takes some getting used to for us Redding and RCBS die fans, but it works O.K.

My Alaskan came in today, nice gun. Can't quite figure out if my stainless barrel is coated or not -- it has a unique finish on it. Very handy, trigger's a bit heavy, I'll see if it can be adjusted when I pick it up tomorrow -- I have my smith putting on a scope, and a limbsaver, on it.

The recoil pad seems to snag quite a bit - seems to be a very sticky rubber.

I don't know how strong the safety mechanism is, seems dlimsy for some reason, but it's unlikely that I'll be taking a hammer to it.

WHile the bolt will move a little with the safety on, I shoved it up, out of place, and then took the safety off, and it still dry fired just fine -- it seemed to pull the bolt handle back down when I pulled the trigger.

Otherwise, quite happy

And I have RCBS dies coming, and brass too. Only question is- Does it need a special shellholder? Or will a RCBS #4 work?

You should be able to use any shell holder for the 300 Magnums etc!

Pac-Nor made me a 375 Ruger barrel for one of my left-hand Ruger 77 actions.

Now they're making me another barrel in 416-375 Ruger -- the exact same case with same shoulder angle, total length, headspace, etc -- with the neck opened to 416.

I was going to go wiht a custom rifle too, then I realized that virtually everything I wanted, Ruger had already done.

I may swap the stock out, got to see how I like the Hogue as opposed to a Macmilan or Bansne.r Smiler

Has anybody in-fact heard whether or not they will follow through with the African or Alaskan Lh'ers?

Last I heard, they dropped their intentions of doing so.

Maybe Boddington got the only one Confused

Got my RCBS dies. The sheet that comes with them says to use A #10 Shell Holder. Obviously wrong. I called RCBS just to help them out and they sent me a free #4.
Got my brass from Hornady.
Will be shooting 300 gr Barnes TSX in Africa next month.

Those in western Canada may be interested: I contacted Russell Sports about availability of 375 brass and Hornady dies and received the following reply:
"Brass #540398 - $59.99
Dies #266554 - $38.99
We expect these products in late June, please contact us then."
They are a good mail order outfit. Here is the link http://www.russellsports.com/

Brass arrived today, picked it up about half an hour ago. No dies yet, but I was eager....

I removed the expander from some Redding 375 H&H dies, screwed it onto some 300RUM dies, and gingerly straightened the mouth of the case.

Then I primed, dumped in a light load of H4350 powder and seated a 300 GR Norma steel jacket bullet on top, using 300 RUM seating die.

(****note: this is not condusive to perfect accuracy! ) Big Grin

Walked out of my shop and onto the range and fired the single round, jjust to check it out.

The velocity was 2400FPS (moderate) and I can only describe the recoil as "moderate." Yes, you know it is there, yes, it is above the recoil of a 223, but frankly it was much more of a pleasure to shoot than some 30-06's I've shot, with ill fitting stocks and hard buttplates.

No pressure sign, the bolt opened with a finger flip.

I should get some factory ammo tomorrow, and dies shortly afterwards, so no more shooting using the jury rigged dies, I have no intention of cranking up the FPS without proper sizing/seating.

When it all comes together I will post a big range report. Maybe shoot a crow or somethign to see if it will kill.

The .375 appears to be a fabulous rifle. I had the same problem as Canuck trying to locate one and then I was discouraged because the availability of brass and lead. I decided to purchase a .378 weatherby instead. Really wanted to try the .375 Ruger though.

Well Chris...To be honest I was all ready to NOT like the Hogue stock, and replace it, before I had ever seen it.

Now? I like it. I think it's pretty good. It is pillar bedded, the recoil pad is thick and squishy and feels good, and the stock is grippy, too. The pad *did* seem to catch a wee bit on my shirt, which didn't please me, but I dont' have ot drag it over my shirt to shoot anyway...

I wouldn't call the stock "attractive" though. The sling stud is on the front end of the stock, not on a barrel band. I don't think it will be an issue, but I think you are a bit taller than me? (I'm 6ft)

I recieved 2 boxes of factory ammo today, but I still haven't been able to shoot it properly- Work got in the way and now my brother and his family are camped on my driveway in their trailer, at the 50 yard mark of my rifle range!! Big Grin

I guess I will see how the accuracy is, and if the stock is comfy to shoot from the bench...

Gatehouse isn't the .375 Ruger about 50 fps faster then the .375 H&H; like it's not much is it?
This is sorta like the .416 Rem vs .416 Rigby isn't it?

What is the difference in the cartridge oal?

Nope,. it's not much faster than the H&H. I bet I will get maybe 50-100fps more in my rifle. I haven't chronoed full charges yet, though...Hornady lists the 270 gr load as 2840fps.

However, I am attempting to taunt Canuck here...Stop introducing any reality here. Smiler
