recoilpadReduced loads for the .470 Capstick
I am thinking about using Hornady's 400 gr XTP hollow point pistol bullets for reduced loads in my .470 Capstick. What would be the maximum velocity for these bullets and still function properly (not blow up prior to or when it hits) for animals such as deer, hogs, and mountain lion?
Thanks.

500grainsI have used both the 400 gr. Hdy XTP and 400 gr. Speer Gold Dot in a 470 capstick. Accuracy was only so-so because the barrel twist was for heavier bullets. However, there was no velocity limit as far as bullets blowing up in mid air. To date I have not shot game with them, but for broadside shots on deer, hogs and mtn lion these bullets would work just fine. On a really big hog the shoulder might break up that bullet though.

jeffeossoin the 358win, i could run 158s at/over 3000fps.. and they BLEW UP on touching jacket rabbits out in west texas.. but at 2000, they nailed hogs like a 35 rem...
so, thump them out at 2000 or less and have a ball

buckeyeshooterI called Speer and asked them about the gold dot bullets for reduced Capstick Loads. The tech told me they had never tried them in a Capstick but the bullet was shot in the lab to 1600fps. Because of the design, he believed they could be pushed a bit faster--perhaps to 2000 fps. I have 40 rounds loaded buy have yet to shoot them.

GeorgeSI have used IMR3031 with the 400gr. HP/XTP with good accuracy in my .470 Capstick.
I never chronographed the loads, though.

ManCannonHornady lists the 475 XTP Mag (400gr) with a velocity performance cap of 1800fps. I assume they start to come apart upon reaching higher velocities. Interesingly enough, they list the 45 XTP Mag, (300gr) with a velocity cap of 2100fps. This data is listed in the 2005 catalog.

SabotTry some 325 gr plated 475s from Midway - no jacket so velocity is not an issue within reason (2600 fps).
