This round really got my attention when I took Saeeds advice and looked it up on the AR Reloading page. Can the RUM case be used in place of the 404? This would make the bolt face work with no mods in any H&H based action.

The short version seems ideal for a 458 winnie conversion, but I assume the necks would need to be turned after one cuts them off...any thoughts?

I am sure you can, depending on the particular rifle you are going to use.

Roy has re-chambered quite a number of rifles which originally were 458 Winchester magnums, and I think he sometimes had to do some work to make them feed properly.

Otherwise, the conversion is very simple, as all he had to do is run the reamer into the original chamber.

That was the idea behind making the 458 Vincent Short.

Thanks, but now I am torn between the short and long versions. I mocked them both up on 375 RUM brass and the long version is far easier to make. Of course it fits nicely in a CZ 550 with a reamed out 458 Win chamber. The short's ballistics are easily duplicated by dropping pressure a bit, and that is always a plus. Very, very nice combo.

SAbot,
Always go with the long version and then you can load it down or up...the extra 1/2 inch of bolt throw is of no consequence IMO...

I agree, and am amazed how much the average shooter is willing to give up for a slightly shorter action/bolt throw. In my case, I came quite close to building a 375 Taylor, even I have a good 375 RUM. After working with the RUM, I discovered that it loves 80% load densities with powders in the 4895 through R15 and Varget burn rate. These will effortlessly break 3000 fps with 225 gr Hornadys and make 2900 fps with the 270 PSPs. Accuracy is as good or better than the full house loads with 7828, R22 and H4831 so the only justification for the taylor is that it is a neat wildcat and has the shorter action.

By the way, what do you think of the vincent long?

This looks very interesting, the Vincent Short would fit quite nicely in a 30-06 length action. But I have two questions.

About both, is there enough shoulder to provide decent case life? And is there a rough idea what sort of pressure these babies run at?

I'm interested in the short because I could probably find a donor rifle more easily for it.

In my experience, case life is dependant on both the chamber and sizing die being matched.

If you have a relatively large chamber, and a relatively small sizing die, your cases are not going to last very long.

Pressurewise, I am not aware if Roy had them checked, but all the loads you see on our Reloading pages are safe in teh rifle we shot them in.

So I would think they are going to be safe in any action that can handle the 458 Winchester magnum.
