Last year I purchased a stainless left handed barreled action in 458 Lott with the MRC #4 barrel, 24 inches long. It has the 3.65 magazine as well. I ordered a McMillan Supergrade stock for it. Had my local smith install NECG front fiber optic sights on it with the NECG adjustable rear sight. Installed the barreled action into the stock and it fit like a glove. With a sling installed the rifle weighs 9 pounds 4 ounces empty. Even the bottom metal fit perfectly.
Rifle made it first trip to the range today with a middle load of 4064 and some Barnes 450's X bullets. These bullets are long!
I took 20 rounds with me and had zero failures to fire or eject but feeding was not perfect. With three down the first one would always feed but on occassion the second would jam up. I think the overall length of the round at 3.6 is to long so I will try reducing the powder charge to get the bullet in the case deeper. I am only using the Barnes bullets for practice as my primary hunting load will be centered around A Frame 400's. Reguardless, I do think the rifle will require some feeding work because when I work the action slow it does not want to always feed correctly. When I experimented with the rifle at the house with dummy rounds not exceeding 3.55 in length it fed them all perfectly.

I will get back to the range next week with some shorter rounds and post the results here. I also just put together a similar rifle in 35 Whelen and it should hit the range next week as well. Will post some pictures as soon as I get my lazy ass in gear and take some photos.

You might try some different bullets. I think the Barnes bullets, because of their length, don't work very well in the .458 Win Mag and probably not very well in the Lott either. That's the problem with these cases.... just not big enough. You might try a plain old 500 grain Hornday round nose. They are shorter and I think they work better in the Win mag and the Lott.

Those Barnes X bullets suck for uniformity. Without changing anything on the bullet seating die I measured the COL after seating and discovered they ranged from 3.60 to 3.53.

I am starting to think the lack of a crimping groove on the bullet is causing the case mouth to hang up somewhere.

Went back to the range today with 20 rounds. This time I measured all of them to keep them uniforn at 3.55 and gave the case a little crimp. All 20 rounds fed, fired and ejected perfectly. Even loaded 3 down and slipped 1 into the chamber and it was flawless.
Guess I didnt load em right the first time.
Good rifle with zero problems at this point. This is a good way for a lefty to get into a stainless crf Lott for a reasonable price.
But man do they kick!

I have a Montana .375 Weatherby in an Echols-McMillan stock. I had feeding problems too. Roger Ferrell fixed them by windowing the magazine and installing a stiffer Brownells spring. Something to keep in mind in case yours acts up in the future.

Thanks. The magazine is already windowed now from the factory.

But I would like to try a stiffer spring just to see what happens. I searched through Brownells catalog and can't seem to find it.
Do you know the part number?

On his invoice Roger said "Brownells M98 magazine spring $12.50". I am not sure how accurate this is as he already had it on hand when I came in crying about my upcoming trip.

Maybe this one:

Interesting that MRC is now windowing the magazine box.

Also, a Williams extractor is probably a good idea.

oldcoyote,

If I remember correctly, the MRC actions use a spring steel extractor, not a MIM'ed one like the late Model 70s.

Williams sells a Montana replacement extractor and, in 2004 at least, claimed it was MIM (last post).

I replaced mine in 2007 before ever using it, not because of any problem. Whatever the case, I now have a "spare" Smiler

P.S. Your buffalo is bigger than mine.

Good to hear the MRC is so far-so good.

I too want to try the stiffer spring in my LH MRC 375 H+H, I havent had alot of issues with feeding/extraction as a 375, but when it was a 416 Rem...........WOW!

Wheres the pics?
