I know it's ugly as sin and about as highly finished as a dump truck's hubcap but these Baikal's are generally servicable field arms and much more afforable than a H&H or Merkel ($650.00 -700.00MSRP vs 20,000+ MSRP).

What do you think about taking one chambered in .30/06 and rechambering it to .300 H&H or .30/06 Improved or just using the original .30/06 on game such as boar, black bear, deer, etc.at short range with heavy bullets such as the 250 grain barnes original or 220 grain nosler partition? It would have much lighter recoil and more propects for general use than a true big bore.

Think of it as kind of a special redneck edition of the famous highland stalking rifle.

The ad says that one barrel is fixed and the shooter would regulate the second barrel by means of a "jackscrew". How would that work? Would it correct for both windage and elevation?
How about the .45-70 with some hot handloads?

A damn pity they don't offer it in a medium bore like the 35 whelen or 9.3X62. That said, a 220 gr rn @ 2200-2400 fps from the ole -06 is a formadle round for most game, and certainly inside the range that a double would be used. I can see no earthly benefit of re-chambering a double rifle to a 300 win mag, it'd be like dropping a Nascar engine into a pickup, sounds cool, but you loose all the versatility that the truck provides.

I saw an article on this gun a couple months ago, but forget what magazine it was in. The author shot a decent Russian brown bear with it while he was over there.

The "jack screw" fits between the two barrels at the muzzle end, and I think that it only corrects for elevation, or the distance between the two barrels.

The barrel profiles looked awfully "slim" to me, I don't know if there would be enough material to rechamber to a 300 magnum.

30-06 Springfield was the largest round that it was chambered for, according to the article.

I'm not going to trade my M77 '06 in on one anytime soon .

I was wrong about the jack screw, it is not at the muzzle. It is located near the center of the barrels, at the front of the forearm.

In the last CDNN Investments catalog that I have, they had them in 30-06 for $349, or $379 for Walnut stock, but I could not find it listed on their webpage.

Whoa!, I really screwed up. All of the info that I had was for an O/U double, NOT SXS!!!!

I haven't seen anything on a SXS, and a the link doesn't seem to work at the moment.
