I bought a new, never fired, Winchester 375 H&H Classic in stainless steel with a synthetic stock for under $600. The front sight is canted to the left (not bent).

I am thinking of replacing the iron sights with a blued barrel band front sight, a blued barrel band sling swivel and a blued express rear sight. Replacing the stock with a Boyds JRS stock in the pepper laminate, having it bedded, adding two cross bolts, add a decelerator pad and have the action tuned. The rifle's purpose is as a second rifle (other is a 416 Rigby Ruger RSM) on a 21 day Tanzania safari in the fall of 2006. It will also see use as an elk rifle in Wyoming and who knows what else the future may hold.

I'd appreciate comments, including recommendations as to makes/brands for the hardware and names of qualified gunsmiths who don't charge and arm and a leg.

the bear78, i was looking at the pop up sight in brownells. Does it just spring up once the scope ring is removed? Also can you leave the factory rear sight on and still use the pop up?

Grizinator-

Yes, it just springs up when you take the scope off. I'm sure you could leave the rear sight on but it might be distracting when looking thru the ghost ring.

Hi SBT
Check that the barrel is 'indexed corerctly' -mine appeared to have the sights canted but a gunsmit corected the problem by indexing the barrel corectly - I did replace them, however. Charlie.

Canted front sight, turn the barrel until its straight, won't hurt head space at all, it happens from time to time..

But your idea of a blue barrel band front and swivel sure is appealing...and one of the willieams peep sights that mount in the rear base holes is neat, i just mounted on on my 10.75 and I really like it, its out of the way, dainty and works well indeed......or the Brockman pop up if your also going to use a scope with it....Brockman also makes a really nice trim, cross bolted laminated drop in stock. He will soon make a super nice wood drop in, as he is getting a supply of European walnut that not to shabby..and the price will be right he says...

Thanks you guys. The Brockman's peep sounds like a good idea. But, having never shot with a peep, what kind of ranges are they good for? with the express sights, I'm comfortable to 200 yards.

I would be careful about turning the barrel back to the right to get the front sight to 12 o'clock. You will be loosening the barrel & the winny factory barrels that i've removed over the past 30 years were never very tight in the first place. Eeker
