Does anyone have a Win Model 70 in the Stainless in 375? If so whats the stock/bedding/sights like and the general fit & finish? I am considering buying one and putting real safari sights on it and maybe a Macmillan stock. Any advice/experiences would be appreciated.

I bougt one a couple of years ago. The stock is a bit flexible so I had it pillar bedded, rebedded the recoil lug and floated the barrel. The accuracy is decent. The iron sights supplied with it stink and, like you, I'm going to fit it with after market open sights, probably N.E.C.G. Overall it feeds smoothly and the finish is decent. The trigger breaks cleanly and I lightened it to a 3 # pull.It weighs about 8 1/2 #'s with a 4x Leupold scope in QR rings and a Latigo sling. Oh, I also had a Gentry stainless barrel band front swivel base fitted.

I hope Winchester has improved the stocks that they are putting on the SS M70's now. The old stocks were made of a injection molded plastic that had no stability and the recoil pad was way too hard. Either find out what you really might get for a stock or get one with a wood or laminated wood stock. Then at least the stock will be of some use. Perhaps the stock I got in 2002 has been improved?

I bought one new about five months ago and have six or seven hundred rounds through it. I am impressed; for about $700 I got a sufficiently accurate and reliable and rust resistant tool. As did MLG, I had to adjust the trigger but it does break cleanly. The fit and finish are appropriate to the price of the rifle and the stock is perfectly adequate from my point of view. Since it'll be used for large animals in heavy cover at ranges less than 100 yards, I installed an XS receiver sight and a slightly shorter front ramp, keeping the stock bead front sight and stock hood. I spray painted the exposed metal parts flat black. This rifle has bumped around in my various vehicles and vessels in the rain and sometimes the mud and has not failed to feed, fire a decent group, and eject. Before I bought the M70 I paid twice as much for a new Ruger in .375H&H and it is a fine gun -- accurate and reliable -- but for a utility instrument I prefer the M70.

I've had one for years. I love this rifle but have modified it quite extensivley. It is cut to 20" crowned and the barrel is fluted. It now is stocked in a McMillian and has a very nice trigger Milled and polished and I had the stainless blued. This is my primary go to gun. It is very accurate rugged and reliable. Sorry I don't have a better picture of the rifle but this gives you the idea. I highly recomend this platform as a starting point to make a really nice do it all rifle.

Thnaks for the comments Gents. Surestrike From what can be seen thats a good looking practical rig but don,t you find it a bit loud with a 20" barrel? Also what iron sights are those? Very nice handy rifle though. Nice warthog too!!

Yes the 20" barrel is a bit loud but nothing you can't live with. I'd not cut it that short next time 22" or 24" is just fine. I cut mine so short so as to be easier to get into and out of small aircraft when I was flying in AK. The surprising thing to me however was how little velocity I lost Even with this short barrel I'm usually within 100fps of published load data. Those sight are just the standard dog turd sights that came with the rifle. I do need to do something about them at some point. They work but are very poor indeed. The scope is a 1.75X6 Vari-X 3 mounted as low as it possibly can be. It is as fast a pointing rifle as you'll find with a scope. This rifle also is scary accurate producing groups off the bench in the 1/2" range with great consistency. The barrel has been trued to the action.

Surestrike Thanks for the photo - thats a great looking rifle. I am hoping to get a model 70 for reasonable money and make this my next project. I would have to go for a monte carlo style stock (they fit me better) and probably a 22-23" barrel and safari sights. Would make for a really good all round practical rifle. Also would not mind bluing like you have done but maybe in one of those weather resistant matt finishes. thanks for the info.
