CH-4D dies and press? Login/Join

A few weeks ago I asked you guys for advice on getting started in reloading a 416 Weatherby. After absorbing said
advice I started looking for the equipment.

The only folks who have 416 W mag dies are CH-4D. They also
have what appears to be a big, heavy duty press called the
Champion. I thought since I'm going to buy their dies I would just get their press as well. It's rather expensive, though, about $250.00.

Question is are any of you guys familiar with the CH-4D Champion press?

Thanks
Wes

Wes,
CH4d makes great tools...

I would not, i think, buy that press, as the rcbs supreme press is fantastic..

and there's an entire kit for $215

DWS,

Graf and Sons has them as well:
Buy Online or Call
800-531-2666

In the Redding brand and Hornaday, here are the part numbers.

RED80492 REDDING 416 WBY FL SET 2-DIE SERIES D $57.59

HRN544430 HRN 416 WBY SERIES IV 2-DIE SET, S/H #14 $47.99

Nothing wrong with the CH brand or their press, which is very heavy duty.

The CH4D press is extremely heavy duty, for those of us who like overkill. But it does not have a long enough throw to make loading the big nitro express calibers convenient. But it should work out well for a Weatherby. I have been thinking of tossing out my Rockchucker in favor or the CH4D heavy duty.

I'd take the Redding dies over CH4D any day. I have been rather disapointed with my CH4D 500 Jeffrey dies, $150 and they wouldn't even work out of the box.

I can't comment on their press, but based on my experience with their dies, I'd lean towards the Redding mag press. Redding has always impressed me with their products.

RCBS dies, I would only buy C4HD dies if they were true special orders! The RCBS dies are typically of far more consistent (and in my opinion total) quality.

I use a Lyman Orange Crusher to load everything this side of a 50 BMG. Actually, I own two, one has the stock 7/8-14 thread and the other I opened up to 1-14 threads for the 0.510 and up crowd! These old Lyman presses have thousands of rounds through them without a hitch!

That is a big press. For comparison:

Lyman Orange Crusher-
Ram diameter - 1.0"
Surface area - 10.5 in^2

Personally I don't think that extra bulk is necessary, but the Champion press is definitely bigger than the Lyman. I think I will stay with my two old Lyman Orange Crushers.
