I shot the 470NE last weekend (Merkel) and was overjoyed that it wasn't painful. I only shot about 10 rounds, but it didn't bother me afterwards or the next day. 300RUM off the bench is worse. I think it might have been less perceived recoil than the neighbor's Model 70 .416 I've shot. I've got a second Model 70 in .375 that I have planned for a while to convert to a .458Lott. The double rifle's probably heavier, and the 500 grain projectile's only doing 2150 instead of 2300. Anybody have any anecdotal or other observations comparing difference in effectiveness on game or recoil for these two calibers? Thanks, Steve

Listen, I own and shoot both. Both kick. The Lott generates more measureable recoil, but it is going to feel a bit different in a magazine rifle compared to a double rifle's recoil. In heavy recoiling guns such as these, I have long since gotten away from comparing one to another. I think you will find similar feelings among some others on this site. I feel that none of these guns will hurt you IF you shoot them correctly and sensibly. After all, they were designed to be shot by mere humans, were they not? So with that said, if you were able to handle a .470NE without developing a flinch or a profound distaste for heavy recoiling guns, I am sure firing a .458 Lott is not going to be a big deal. Now, as to whether you find shooting these rifles fun... well that requires being the sort of nut that hangs around web sites like this. I hope this adds some insight. Geronimo
