.450/.400 NE vs .458 Lott
I have a chance to get either a .450/.400 NE or a .458 Lott in the Ruger #1-H Tropical with walnut stock. Which would be the better investment? The better gun? Any thoughts? I just want to get another big gun. Jim

I think you'll find the .450/.400 3" just right for the Tropical model. The classic load is a 400 grain bullet at 2150 fps, but in a Ruger no. 1, that velocity is a starting point if you are a handloader. I'd find me a load about 2230 fps or so, working up to that carefully, of course, and you have a very powerful rifle with tolerable recoil. Muzzle energy will be more then 4400 ft. #'s.

I think the rifle is too light in weight for full house Lott loads, IMHO.

beeing in a #1, and knowing how bad they handle recoil, sure, get the 450/400!

1) Better Investment? If you keep it in the box and don't use it I think the .450/400 as a collector piece. If planning to use the .458 Lott would have a larger re-sell market because of public awareness of the Lott and .458 Win Mag along with ammo availability.

2) The better gun? Both equal

3) Any thoughts? The .450/.400 NE was designed with a flange for break-open actions and while the No.1 handles bolt designed cases I like the .450/.400 in this application.

Investment wise the 450-400 IMO...

Which is the better gun? That depends on a number of issues. The .458 Lott is much more powerful any way you cut it and it also has considerably more recoil.

It boils down to what is your choice, nobody can make that decision but you..Both are fine calibers and what your intended use is going to be would be the prime issure IMO...

i think you can only compare the 450 N.E. 3,25 to the Lott and this cartridge would be my choice...

Good choice and I might add that the No.1 really kicks hard with a std. 458 round and a Lott would be much more..The 450-400 will be much nicer to shoot.
