Have anybody heard of such a thing?? Or somthing similar.
I'm thinking of something fitting in a Mauser M98 action.

It is called a 495 A-Square.

Take a 460 weatherby case, cut it to 2.8", and seat a 570 grain .510 bullet. 2420 fps. A gentleman called 'Sooner' on this board has one built by A-Square on a Enfield action.

If you want to build one on a model 98, please keep the following in mind:

1. Use a magnum length EXTRA DEEP magazine box. Otherwise you will only be able to fit 2 rounds in the magazine box. Ted Blackburn and Sunny Hill make them.

2. Making the weatherby case feed in a model 98 is a bit of a trick. It would be wise to use a gunsmith who has done it before successfully, and there are not many of them.

Assuming you go ahead with the project, please let me know what gunsmith you use, because I might want to go the same route. I prefer for all of my guns to be on model 98's, but I am moving toward settling for a CZ550 for a .510 bolt action rifle.

If you want me to fax you the case drawing and loading data for the 495 A-Square, just let me know.

460WBY- I looked carefully at building a 500 short A2 on both a Mauser and Enfield action. The bottom line is unless you can do this yourself and have lots of time don't bother. Just to get the action set-up properly figure on spending about $500 in Parts and then another $500-$700 in labor. Then add in about 6 months waiting time. In the end you will have a very marginal set-up for this cartridge. You are time and money ahead starting with a CZ550 action in .416Rigby for about $600. I built My 500 A2 on the CZ550 Mag and it only needed some minor rail work to feed flawlessly. If you want more details I'd be happy to provide them.-Rob

Thanks guys.
I've heard about the 495 A2 if I'd looked inside my backhead!! I belive it's mentioned in "Any shot you want"?
I know that a CZ "magnum" action, 550 or 602 action would have been the most proper. But thats the trick; here in Norway it's quite easy to get hold of a cheap M98 actions.
I already have a BRNO 602, chambered for 460wby. If I had another of those actions I would have gone for the "full version" -500 A-square.

The A-Square .460 Short was designed to fit in the same size action as the 458 WinMag. I can't tell from the text what case it was based on or is a new design. Ballistics are listed as 500gr at 2400 fps.
