I was just browsing through some older posts here and got to reading about the .458 HE and one of the posts, by Mr. Hubel himself I believe, said that if one had a .458 Lott Ruger No.1 that you only needed to ream the chamber deeper to have yourself a .458 HE. It sounds like you can rechamber to .458 HE and still be able to shoot .458 Lott & Winchester Mag ammo. Am I right on this? If so, my Ruger No.1 may need some surgery! thumb

The .510 HE looks cool too with it's straight walled case, rim, and velocity potential. Will the .510 HE fire any of the other established cartridges? It looks like it could also fire the .500 NE, if not maybe the .50-110 or something. I'm trying to find out on my own but haven't had much luck yet.

Either of these cartridges would make for an ideal open range bison or grizzly slayer and would be right at home in a Ruger No.1.

I've been wanting to build an ULTIMATE RUGER NO.1 BIG BORE for quite a while now and both of these cartridges seem perfect for the job. I've been wanting to do a No.1 in .577 Nitro or .600 JDJ but many experienced gun folk have said it was asking for trouble and that the .510's are about the limit for the No.1. These two fit the bill! Smiler

I would greatly appreciate some more info on these two cartridges if Mr. Hubel or anyone else can answer these questions and expand on what I've read about them. Cool

I'm not pushing these cases as it is too hard
and expensive to get brass made. So I concentrate
on promoting my 585HE and 700HE. I can do
my 700HE ok and make a few of the 585HE cases while
working up to get a runn of brass made.
Plus the working with 12ga,8ga, 28ga, 10ga, 2ga,
4ga, etc, experimenting.

Seeing as how a #1 has an extractor that works
very well with rimless cases, my 585 would be
perfect if interested. Less work on the back of
block to get it to feed compared to 577 bases cases.Ed

Mr. Hubel, thanks for the response. The one I'm most interested in is the .458 HE because I view it as a reamer job away from being able to push a 500 grainer 2700 fps+ while still retaining .458 Lott and .458 Win capabilities. A very big reason for my interest in the .458 HE is that the conversion would be inexpensive since there would be no other alterations (that I know of through what I've read in previous posts) made since my No.1 is already chambered for the .458 Lott.

The .510 HE holds some interest too. A straight cased .510 cal chambered in the Ruger No.1 that could get REAL velocity with BMG bullets would be my definition of big bore fun, whether on the range or on the open prairie lining up a shot on a big bison bull! thumb

I've not read up on the .585 HE much and since I'm going to be buying a .600 OK in the near future, I'm not as interested in it. I couldn't afford to feed both of those monsters right now! From what I've read about others buying or building .585" calibers on the No.1, it would be more money than I can afford to spend right now with nearly my spendable income tied up in the .500 A2 and a .600 OK projects. I might be able to squeeeeeeeze in a .458 HE reamer job, a low budget version of a semi-12 GaFH or something of that nature but certainly nothing big for a while. I want to get a .416 Ruger when they come out too (BAD!) but that too will take a back seat to my AHR .600 OK.

The .458 HE was definately the one that grabbed my attention. Too bad it's impractical for you to make cases for it because I think it would make for a very versatile big bore chambering in the Ruger No.1 that is to be my "BISONATOR" but that's the way it goes sometimes.

After I weather the financial storm broght on by AHR and Ruger's new .416 in 2009, I might have to look into your .700 HE. It appears to be a great cartridge that's comparatively inexpensive to chamber and load for. I want to buy a Savage 210 and rechamber it to the .700 HE or the 12 GaFH or who knows, maybe one of each if my wallet and shoulder can take it. I'll look more into the .585 HE and .700 HE and the other monsters that you, RobGunbuilder and other MAD SCIENTISTS have developed and I'll surely end up with a couple in my gun safe before it's all over. Thanks again, Mr. Hubel!!! Smiler
