This is killing me...I have three calibers racing through my head and two action. I have a M1999 long and an M1999 short action. I will build one more rifle and sell the other action.
9.3X70mm Expert Magnum
404 J
376 Steyr
and I want it to look like this:
Mate to my 6.5X55....It is so heavy built I can use it as a direct model....PS The M1999 already has the bolt face cut for 376 and the loading ramp and magazine worked over.
LOVE that barrel and its profile. I actually have mine in a little 6.5X55 so it is medium heavy, but i can get under 1.5 inch at a little over 300 yards.

This is the twin of my rifle, with mine built on the '09. I really like the #5130 LW profile, just like a type A Mauser

It makes me happy every time I get to take it to the field!
So is the 404 next or a 376 or 9.3X70mm

HuviusMy William Evans is on a standard length Mauser '98.

ozhunterAlmost had one built on a VZ24 which I would consider about ideal.
Two friends are having there's made on Prectel Magnum actions. While being magnificent actions I often wonder why one would use such a big action when not needed. Might have been better to use the for a 416Rig build.

VFR1OZ, Rube Wells gave me grief for not waiting and using one of their sq bridge magnum actions. Beautiful workmanship, no doubt, but I really like slim lines afforded by the standard action. My rifle clocks in at 8.25lbs w/o scope or ammo.

Bill/OregonI'm going to have mine built on a 1909 Argentine as well.
Thinking PacNor or Lothar Walther for the barrel.

eagle27Mine wasn't built, it just evolved from a standard length Type A 10.75x68.
Ray you commented on another post that have seen a few of these evolutions butchered, would be interested to hear your take on this?

Bill/OregonPaul, may I ask what the barrel length is on your WR original? Do you know what the twist rate might be?

A7DaveWell I hope one of you is happy! I sold a absolutely MINT 1909 Argentine at a time I thought I needed more room in the gun safe (was moving at the time). At the time I had some vague idea of rebarreling it, but didn't have the heart because it was so pristine.
I hope someone got it and turned it into one of these gorgeous rifles!
I have a 1937 marked receiver VZ-24 that has a counterbored barrel. This one isn't getting away; hopefully to become a 404 someday.

mstarlingSigh ...
I often avoid threads like this. The 404J has always had an attraction for me and these threads always draw some contributors that have built true gems.
sigh ...
Good to know that some folks have both the means and the great taste to invest is such beautiful hardware.

Thanks for the eye candy folks

EsskayAn original, un modified, WJ Jeffery 404, made 1908. As original right now, am thinking of having it scoped etc etc...will post pics later

Bill/OregonMike: I'm only going to make mine happen by giving up on my double rifle dream.
Esskay: REALLY looking forward to pics of your original.

mine was a rescue project, original Jeffery barrel and stock and I sourced an early oberndorf action to replace the missing one, modified wiebe bottom metal and engraving by Charles Lee.
Bill, re the Westley Richards .404 Magnum, I will measure the barrel and then get an estimate of the twist rate with the cleaning rod. According to the new Westley Richards book, 1926 was year of manufacture. It has the LT prefix on the serial number.

lrichMy Pre 64 Model 70 is at Tip Burns being rebarreled to 404 Jeffery (was a 375 Weatherby). It will be ready in about 3 weeks.
The rifle came with Griffin and Howe side mounts and 2 sets of 1" rings, My scope choices are these: I have 2 Leupold VX III 1.5 x 5's and 1 Leupold VX III 1.75 x 6. Do I use both the 1.5 x 5's or one 1.5 x 5 and the 1.75 x 6 for vesitility?
