After 13 months, I finally received my .404. Built by the Well's family of Prescott AZ, it uses a 09 Argentine action with Weibe bottom metal, and a Danny Pedersen barrel. It is a copy of an A model Mauser as the stock pattern is from an original .404 Mauser. 75gr of RL15 gave me a five shot average of 2252fps pushing Hornady DGR solids. Will use AFrames for softs as they performed well in my 10.75.

Mine is being built on a Husky M98 action built in 1939 or 1940.
I can't remember which one the 404J is being built on.

Steve Button is building me a 7x57 & 404J on the two Huskys.

Using LW contour #5130 barrels, 25" for the 404J
but I increased the dia at each station a little.
The muzzle dia is .675 for the 404J.

Using Weibe MJ4 bottom metal, 4 down without a drop box.

Oberndorf style bolt handle, ie.. no cut out of the stock.

Kept charger hump. Open sights only 1 standing 2 folding,
front sight shaped like a Rigby.

Barrel band with a large eye for a leather thong sling.

The action is all cleaned up bolt done barrel is there.

Should be finished pretty soon.

I should have pics to post shortly.

Granite Mountain Standard Mag. Action built by Ralf Martini. Two Cape Buffalo and a few PG to its credit.

I have been using North Fork softs and solids at a nominal 2400 fps....works great. Looking forward to a couple of Elephant in the next 18 months....

Mine is on an LH MRC SS barreled action. 23" tube, bastogne stock, NECG sights & band, Leupold VXIII 1x5 with Talley QR rings. Not a thing of beauty but I like her.

Winchester Model 70 RUM action with a PacNor barrel and NECG Masterpiece Rear Sight and Barrel-Band Front Sight. Hill Country Rifles put it together for me in a MacMillan stock and cerakoted the metal. Certainly not traditional but it is lights out accurate and suits my needs well.

That said, I truly covet Jim's Ralf Martini custom....

My 404 is still sitting in pieces here at the house, but I've collected everything for it. 1917 Winchester Enfield action that has already been sporterized, Timney trigger, pac nor barrel, Weibe bottom metal, NECG sights, Lexus Turkish walnut blank, and will likely carry a Trijicon scope once complete.

Danged if I know what action mine is built on fer sure...I know it has a Ferlach barrel. The action is stamped "Musgrave", but it looks like a very large SAKO push-feed.

And it does feed very, very reliably, from any angle...upright, horizontal, upside down, whatever. Having been built by South Africans in South Africa, I have no hesitation relying on it.

My old one was on a Mauser 98 Magnum action, and was originally finished up and sold by Rigby in the early 1900s. I'd be satisfied with it back, but I actually like the new one better in terms of operating smoothness.

Mine is an original FN factory rifle in the caliber made in the 1950's.
The usual large FN in a circle crest on the front ring and the caliber stamped on the barrel in the typical Belgian manner of "cal.404 B.Blindee".
I have had others but it is my favorite,I have it paired with a very similar 9.3x62....Pretty useful combination I have used on several trips, most recently in Zim. last year.

Should have a photo around here somewhere.

Most of my 404 were built on Obendorf 1908 actions or Chileans or something simular, some on true magnum acitons. I really liked the big magnum actions

My present 404J is built on a Rem. mod 30S and I really like it..It is my first rebored barrel from the original 25-06 Rem barrel, and I reshaped the factory stock and it was my using gun..It shot like a vamint or target rifle, so I had it tricked out with quarter rib, one standing, trigger, Talley bolt and barrel band front sight..Still wasn't happy so I stocked it in a nice chunk of quarter sawn Russian Circasion walnut, I'm checkering it now at 24 LPI and mullered borders, and the stock is very severe English/African styling. so my working rifle is now a full blown custom with all the bells and whistle except the usual mod. 70 safety, I opted for the silent and positive Enfield type safety that comes on the Remington 30s'..I had never used this safety but I really am sold on it for DG rifle. No more the truck gun..

I used the standard box on my build. I filed half the thickness from the inside of the rear of the box then cut the front out by running the hacksaw paralell to the sides and making a new front wal and had it welded on esentially in front of the origional front and then got the GS to mill the sides of the box to give me 3+1 for a trim feel in the hand. Not the 4+1 that the aftermarket bottom metal gives but my budget had me consider these things. Have had it on the hill and got onto a big mob of goats and between the two of us (a friend was using my 7x57, we got 21 goats out of a mob of 30 or more, so the 3+1 rather than a 4+1 was certainly not a handicap. Had a button release installed on the origional floor plate . Very secure and still a quick and easy unload . Have since re-shaped the forend to trim it down a little more.
As I said, not a Wiebe or a Paul or Martini but it sure does a work for me.

you had a barrel rebored from .25 to .423?! shocker I thought that was beyond the capabilities of reboring? something about half the diameter of the bore surrounding the barrel? please, tell me more about your rifle. I have a '17 winchester wearing it's .30/06 barrel with a nice profile...
