Sight for a 404? Login/Join

I have a 404 built on a Mauser action that still has the hump on the rear of the receiver. It has good iron sights but unfortunately these old eyes need a peep sight. Does anyone make a peep sight like the XS that can be installed without a major project? Also, is there a gunsmith anyone would recommend to fabricate a peep sight? I really don't want to cut the stock since it is really a nice McMillan stock. Hate to get rid of it but if I can't come up with a rear sight arrangement I'm afraid that will be my option. It has a flag safety, a bolt designed for iron sights and would change the look of the gun to scope it.

Mate Rusty (on this site or Nitro Express?) can do a cocking piece peep sight. That may be your best shot.

Other manufacturers do this sight too.

Ted Yost has grafted AR15 rear sights onto Winchesters, I suspect he could do a Mauser although I don't know how much money he would want.

My sights are NECG Island and hooded front ramp.
As I remember Talley made a peep sight that fit on it's rear base. Someone used to make a peep that popped up when you removed the scope from the rear base. Can't remember who??

Brockman makes the pop up peep. I ave one on a 30-06 but i am considering a talley removeable due to mounting issues with the brockman. Given the ring spacing and power ring on the scope it can sometimes be a challenge.

Sorry Rusty, thought you made a cocking piece peep sight.

Someone makes them and they can be fitted, will look up some post.

Cheers, Chris

Thanks for the info so far. The bolt peep looks interesting but I'm afraid it would be fragile on a working gun in Africa.
The Talley peep is an idea I will investigate with Gary Turner at Talley.
I am also going to talk with XS since they now show one on their web site for a Mauser. I can't tell from the pic if the hump is there or not.

I talked with Gary today about the peep and he said, "I'll send you out one and you can see if it will work for you." Good guy.

The XS sight is a real PITA. I purchased an XS peep for a Mauser because it was my understanding that XS was the new name for Ashley Sights. I know that the peep Ashley produced allowed you to leave the hump in place.

Well, my XS sight arrived and it would not work with the charger hump. On top of that it had some odd hole spacing so it would not work on an FN type rear bridge either. The XS sight is a joke as is is not really made to fit anything right out of the box.

I did get mine fitted, but again it was a real pain.

I called XS a while back and they said, "Yeah, we don't sell many of the Mauser sights anymore. Something had to be done to the rear bridge, but I can't remember what it was."

Whatever.......
Roll Eyes

I would look up Skinner Sights. He is making peeps for lever actions, but he is very accommodating and seems very willing to produce custom sights.

Here is his website.

Should be pretty easy for a good gunmaker to build something like this - with or without the claw base.
