I have a Winchester 70 Safari Express. Fine rifle.

The front sling swivel stud is a Band around the ( thick! ) barrel, the rear base is finely inletted in the stock.

All well and good, only needs slightly longer sling.

No Biggie - usually.

Now the best sling I have had is an Uncle mike´s one, tan, Nylon webbing, very strong, with sewn on sling swivels made of metal. 1 1/4".

Was cheap at the time, I curse myself for not buying more of them.

Now, as all good things, of course discontinued.

Please advise me : what Sling would you get for a Safari Rifle?

I have no Problems with Nylon webbing slings, but don´t really like God - knows - what - Polymer slings.

I like 1 1/4 " wide.

I want METAL swivels.

I like a non slip underside, as something like suede lining on my UM´s.

PLEASE: what would you suggest???

These aren't exactly traditional bit I have used them in Africa and here in the states. they are comfortable, don't slip off of your shoulder and work well as a shooting sling. very long nd adjustable, I find the sweet spot. cut them down and have them resewn

I like and have used the trader kieth sling and also the leather slings made by Andy's Leather.

Do be aware that if the front sling swivel is mounted on a barrel band rather than in the forearm, you should not use the sling as a shooting aid as the pressure exerted on the barrel will change the harmonics and impact the POI in a negative way.

All my large bores utilize barrel bands and I have used the Butler Creek brand stretch neoprene slings for 15 years to carry all my rifles.

+1 on Trader Keith. I have one on my R8 Blaser with the Selous barrel

Do be aware that my big bores all have barrel bands for the slings. I practice and hunt with and without using a sling while shooting. At big bore hunting distances my shooting is better with the sling. I have never noticed a negative effect using a sling.

But then again I am not one of the guys that can shoot 1 1/2 groups offhand at 100 yards with a iron sighted big bore.

I used the nylon/rubber grippie kind by quakeinc. on my Model 70 on the last two safaris, light weight, plenty of shoulder support, and easily removed if necessary.

Blackhawk makes a good, all-purpose sling, this one (above) extends from less than 3 feet to over 5 feet long, has a nonslip liner, and is 1-1/4" wide.
Cheap, simple, will fit anything.
You can leave it long and doubled, or cut it down and flame the nylon webbing strap edge.
It is not flimsy.

Add your own 1-1/4" wide Uncle Mike's Super Swivels.

Or they make a shorter "Mountain Sling" that comes with the swivels and brighter "BLACKHAWK!" logo lettering on it. Same rugged construction, just shorter, thus lighter in overal weight:

My favorite is the "Latigo" sling that takes up and lets out. They are leather and a continuous loop arrangement. You can see them at Brownells, and other suppliers too. They now make them in 1 1/4 too, although all of mine are the 1 inch wide ones. I didnt see any real difference there. Some of my Latigo are older and still going strong.

I use the "TRADER KEITH" type on most of my rifles plus a good portion my friends rifles.

Absolutely correct, and not just the harmonics

Anyone with the basic mechanical knowledge, will know OR RATHER SHOULD KNOW how even a slight pressure will bend 3-4-5 or even an 8 contour size barrel.

If it is a free floating barrel and the gap is small the barrel deflection will be halted on a contact (forend/barrel) and the POI may not be so obvious.

However if the gap is large enough lets say .12" and the barrel/forend won't make a contact the POI will show far more of variation.

The reason is that the pressure applied by using the barrel mounted sling is not constant and so is the the barrel deflection.

If someone has doubts about it, just take a rifle of your choice and use your thumb and an index finger and squeeze the barrel and forend together at the tip and take notice of the gap.

Apparently some do have doubts! The pressure applied to the barrel by a properly correct, tight shooting sling will affect POI, just as you say.

It should be a FOREND not a forearm, just to clarify my mistake.
