Mad Dog.450/400 3" vs. .458 WM felt recoil?
Other than some +P loads in a .45-70 guide gun, the only other "bigbore" I have ever shot[other than 12 ga. slugs], has been a .458 WM. The rifle was a stock pre 64 Mod. 70, and the load was the old 510 gr. SP factory load from Win. I fired it about 20 times off the bench to get the iron sights in for a buddy. Seems none of his friends ever shot it more than twice, because of the recoil. I will admit, because the rifle seemed light, that the rifle beat on me pretty good.
My question is in a 9-9 1/2 lb. rifle[ruger no. 1], will the felt recoil be greater or less with the .450/400? Thanks.

jeffeossoI shot lewe440's 450/400 nitro last weekend. Right along with 458 lotts and some 458lott plinkers...
the 450/400 MIGHT have weighed 9.5 or so the bolt guns about the same
recoil was TRVIAL with "full house" 450/400 NE loads compared to the least of the 500gr .458 loads
of course we are talking 400gr at 2250 MAX vs 500gr at 2150 min...
the 450/400's recoil is less than a 375 HH, in my learned shoulder's opinion...
then again, when I got around to shooting that, I had been popping off 550 expresses and even a 308 felt like a paint ball marker

lee440I agree with Jeffe, the 400 Nitro with 400gr.@2100 is slightly milder, recoil-wise, than the 375. My Double weighs 9.25 lbs. and is a pussycat to shoot.
