this post doesn't deal with any particular big bore, but it seems like the big bore crowd is very tuned in to the CZ rifles and the audience is much larger. my question deals with scope mounting. i very much like to shoot with open sights when i can. but my vision is getting to be a problem. i'd like to get one of these rifles in the Lux configuration because of the iron sights. my concern is that when i finally go to a scope, will the Lux stock cause me to have to lift my face up so high that i'll start wishing i had bought the American? if so, then i probably ought to go ahead and get the American now...........thoughts???

You may well be right. My hog-back .416 was great for iron, and the scope in CZ rings was high. But if you don't get bolt clearance problems from it, maybe one of the wrap-on cheekpieces made out of suede and recycled dried jelly will fill the bill. [It did for me, until my vitreous humor decided it didn't want to be so closely associated with my retina any more. Ophthalmologist and I both feel that I should avoid big-bores until the divorce is final.]

I guess it depends on how well the add-on fits it to you, and whether you will EVER use iron sights.

The Hog's Back design is intended for scope use. The point of stock weld is pretty much the same height as the American style.

The Hog's Back is "not" intended for magnum use. The angle of recoil is tolerable for cartridges up to the 9.3x62, after that it gets bothersome.

I have been shooting the CZ 550 in 375 magnum for about 4 months now. I find it fits me well with the Lux stock and a 1-4X scope. The recoil with 300 grain bullets is not really any worse than with a lite weight 30-06 shooting 180-200 grain bullets. I like the fit of the Lux stock on the CZ better than the synthetic stock on my Remington ADL. [Smile]

dr.scott, my cz-550 safari .458 wm, with factory 510 gn sp's, have about the same or less felt recoil than my old win. 30-06 with 180 gners. the hogback stock feels good to me.i use a 4x scope.

maybe i'm not smart enough to know better?

with all of the talk about detached retinas, i am thinking about some kind of porting or brake.

i'm 37 years old with 20/20 vision, and would like to keep it that way.

the way i learned to shoot, pretty much self taught, condemn the target, throw the rifle to the shoulder, aim, bang..

don't play with the cheek weld etc. anything more than 1-2 seconds, then you start thinking.
is the face properly fitted to the stock, how much holdover is right, yadda, yadda, yadda. then the quarry is gone.

halfbreed,
I'm with you on all the above.
I have come to love the hogback CZ stock since I have used it on my 458 WinMag CZ 550 Safari Magnum. It is at the smith's shop now, being converted to 458 Lott. I found the factory express sights were spot on for windage, and can be filed down for final elevation with the selected load.

I also tried the Winchester 510 grain RNSP's and got just over 2000 fps in the 25" CZ barrel, hence the Lott conversion.

I also like that "hogback" design of the CZ 550 Safari Magnum. It reminds me of my 460 WB monte carlo stock. The monte carlo style stock is superior in handling recoil for me. I don't understand why most people do not like it. Cheers! Ming

i appreciate all of your responses. i have a Lux model also. the problem i have noticed though, and the original subject of my question, is that with a scope mounted on the rifle, i have to pick my cheek up a lot to get in line with the scope. so much so that i was considering buying another in the American model. i was inquiring to see if others of you had the same situation. thanks again...

Ming I like the weatherby style for recoil as well, I have a weatherby stock on my cz .416 Rigby and will be getting a weatherby on my .585.

bill smith,
Yep, the CZ Hogback is great for the iron sights that come on the gun from the factory. It is not ideal for scope use, but one can learn to shoot a scope with it if willing.

The stock also has a lot of pitch that seems to lessen muzzle rise in recoil. This is "pitch down" at the butt end. Besides the significant drop and hogback pseudo-Monte-Carlo, this is another prominent feature of the stock:

1. drop at heel
2. hogback comb swell
3. pitch of butt

Hey, I have come to like it after using it more. As a plus, it is definitely prettier than a California style Weatherby stock. Weak praise there!

If anyone doesn't like the stock, a BRNO ZKK 602 factory stock or other synthetic or laminate stocks are available out there.

I will glass bed the hogback and leave it on the 458 Lott for primary express sight use. I like it.

If anyone wants to send me their spare hogbacks I will find use for them, besides kindling.

Dagga Ron I will have two stocks soon, one of my Brno 602 soon to be .585 and I already have one of my cz 550 .416. I would be willing to trade them for a couple of things which are dirt cheap were you are and bloody expensive were I am [Cool]

e-mail me if your interested
