Guys, What were the size of the factory groups sent with your CZ 550 rifles in .416 Rigby? (How small a group should I hold out for as I look for one in a dealer's hands?) How have your groups compared with the factory groups? (and, bye the way, how many shells do are actually held in the magazines of your rifles?) Thanks! Oh, 3 legitimately in the mag, plus a fourth ONLY if you take time to see that the extractor slips over its rim before chambering (and putting on safety). wthbymag

Kudu2001, Thank you for the input. Guys ... Would sure appreciate more input here. Am trying to decide whether or not to accept a new CZ 550 with a 1 1/2" factory group or look further for a rifle with a better group. Your input would REALLY be appreciated!!!!

Mike, 1.5" at 100, with a scope, is acceptable.. but easily beatable. .75 is about as good as it gets.. but, even though it was locked into a vise, you should be able to better that. I would take it... as a matter of fact, when I finally get around to getting my rigby cz, i will demand a sub inch targer. try www.gunbroker.com for a wider selection. Your dealer CAN ask his distributor for a better target.. but the wood might have all the grain of a broomstick jeffe

I wouldn't pay a lot of attention to the factory test target. A few years ago, I bought a mint Walther P88 with box, manual, two mags. Spoke to the US Walther distributor about parts and told him I had a complete gun EXCEPT for the provided factory test target. He says, "what's the serial number?" I told him and next thing I know I get an official "factory" test target signed and numbered to my gun in the mail! If your gun is in a sealed box, the target may well belong to it but if the box has been opened, all bets are off and the better targets may well be paired with the poorer stocks to make them more saleable etc.

gotta argue with that... you should expect the target to go with the gun, and be indicative of it's performance... after all, they've been putting "proof targets" with guns for 150+ years. jeffe

I'll argue too. The CZ targets have the serial number of the gun on them, scribbled in ink. I passed on a 2-1/8" factory target in a CZ .416 Rigby. The two I couldn't let pass me by had 5/8" and 3/4" factory groups for three shots at 100 meters, .416 Rigby. 1-1/2" is fine. Glass bedding it will likely make it sub-MOA. CZ's are good. As a matter of fact that 2-1/8" target was the worst I have seen for a CZ .416 Rigby. But I know the guy that bought it for $615. A followup revealed that his initial zero after bedding showed three shots into 3/4" at 100 yards. Maybe luck and compensating errors? They all need to be glass bedded anyway. Maybe the factory test firer sneezed and threw one bullet wide at the machine rest, or it was one bad cartridge that opened up the group? The bad target had two bullet holes touching and one thrown wide. Mine are routinely 3/4 MOA with the right load, when I do my part.

My factory target was about 1". I manage to shoot a 5 shoot group about 2" with really poor rests and handloads. I expect to better that group with a better rest. Perhaps 1,5"/5 shoots is what I might be able to do. I bedded the lugs and the tang before the group was shot.

I went through the same process you did, however, I selected the best looking wood over a fraction of an inch better target! Peter.
