who's shooting what with Woodleigh solids?

I wanna say I was shooting 110 grains of Rel-15 with those, Rich. That's right at 39,500 psi and 2300 fps. 130 grains of Rel-19 will work about the same if you like better load density (81% vs. 96%). Lots of room to grow if you want more than that. There's more data on the Ar reloading pages.

I was using 108 grains of RL15, F215M, 5 grains dacron and 600 grain Woodleigh SPs and was averaging 2144 fps. Extreme spread was 33 fps. For a 600 grain bullet I was looking for 2150 fps and that's about what I was getting. Hope that helps.

I have loaded 130 grains of Rel-15 behind the 525 Woodliegh solid for almost 2600 fps but neither Hog Killer nor I recommend it.

Hi Rich,
I settled on 130gn AR2209 (H4350) behind the 600gn Woodleigh (soft or solid) for around 2270fps. (The solids are probably about 10fps slower, which is minimal difference). I use 140gn AR2209 behind the 525gn soft (haven't tried the 525gn solid yet), for about 2500fps. Those are both mild loads in my rifle, but use caution, and start from a bit lower in your rifle.

For Woodleigh 600 grainers, you best not get over 2300 fps if you want them impacting at 1800 to 2200 fps, the recommended velocity by Woodleigh.

Use Nickudu's RL-15 loads with 4 to 5 grains of Dacron filler.
His most accurate load was about 2300 fps with 600-grain Barnes solids.

Most oomph for the least recoil: RL-15 or Varget with Dacron.
Good idea if it is to be used by a girl.

Since I have hundreds of options besides .505/600gr bullets to use for whatever I might need,
I mostly don't use the .505.

The way this thread was languishing, however, it is a good thing that I have drawn you into livening it up.

Pray tell what velocities your loads with 600-grainers translate to:

Cordite: 80 grains
and
Norma MRP-2: 128.5 grains

I am sure that the velocity is well below 2300 fps.
Is it 2150 fps?

If you start the Woodleigh 600-grainers off at 2300 fps, either the soft or solid,
they will be well below 2200 fps at 50 yards.
At 100 yards, they will be well below 2100 fps.

If you want to shoot at 25 yards or less, limit the MV to 2200 fps with Woodleighs.

Frankly, I would get a better bullet and use higher velocities.

However, this thread is about adapting a .505 Gibbs for a girl to shoot elk with.

Elk are more likely to be shot at 50 to 100 yards, or longer.
2300 fps would be a good girl's load for elk with 600-grain Woodleighs.

The antique loads for the .505 Gibbs were 525-grainers at 2300 fps.
Maybe that would be a better elk load for a girl?
