Yes but most here would use a controlled feed action.....I do know one gut that paid around 2 K for a Howa that was redone by a gunsmith in Texas .......Harry McGowan can do the work and he has a nice turn around time..I am very happy with the barrels I have and have had of his....His # is 815-937-9816

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

my howa will feed 458 ammo but not all the way because the bullet is to big.

the gunsmith said if it is a 458 then an attachment will have to go on the barrel

should i sell the howa and by a rifle in 458

thank you for your time and help

shootalot,

most here believe building a 458 means you want to go to Africa with it, and the CRF, controlled round feeding) is much superior (and safer) than the PF, push feed actions. The Mauser 98 and old (pre-64) Winchesters are CRF, the Remington 700 and yours are PF. CRF actions have that big claw extractor which grabs the round out of the magazine box and holds it against the bolt so that it would feed upside down or sideways. Work a PF bolt about half sideways, and the round will fall out.

Your action will be fine as a 458. Get a barrel fit and go happy!!

shootalot,

Your Howa can be converted to .458 - install new barrel, reinforce the stock, add a thicker/softer recoil pad, work the rails, change the magazine follower, etc.

It might be cheaper for you to buy a factory .458, though.

shootalot,

It would be a shame to waste the productive years of a fine gunmaker in screwing a new barrel to an action that is concsidered a step down even from the most famous of all push feed actions - the Mark V.

May I suggest that you consider a model 98 or a model 70 as the basis for your project? Even if you are one of the great abominations to the human gene pool - a lefty ( Eeker ) , Model 70's can be found used as the starting point for any fine rifle.

thank you for the advice.

am i right in thinking that converting the existing rifle will be Ok buy a 458 in another rifle would be more desirabe.

Would a winchest or cz in 458 work better than rebarreling my existing rifle

I don't care what people think of my rifle i only care what will work best

Again, thank you all for you advise

The question is not whether a Weatherby is out of your price range. The question is whether your tastes run to the deviant side. If so, then wby is for you. If not then stick with a normal gun.

Over time I have come to think less and less of CZ and their crap quality control.

Also, a rebarreled howa will be an abomination.

As you seem interested in push feeds, may I suggest a Sauer 202?

An alternative for you is to follow the path of Saeed and buy AMERICAN: Dakota actions and Leupold scopes. It seems to be a working forumula.

If you really have to have the .458 Magnum with a left handed action in CRF you are probably going to have to find a used Winchester Model 70 (good luck finding one) or if you want a new one take a risk with an order to Dakota Arms.

Of course, if you are willing to settle on a new caliber in a new rifle it may soon be possible to obtain (according to their web site) a left-handed Ruger African in .375 Ruger. And maybe in a few more months a Ruger African in .416 Ruger, once that is invented.

Mea culpa for assuming that shootalot is a lefty. The devil made me do it, it's society's fault, it's.....
