Gents,

This isn't exactly a big bore topic, but, has anyone used the Weaver 2.5X fixed on a heavy recoiling gun?

The 458 Lott has a reputation as a "scope eater"
A good idea would be to get one of the Leupold
bore sighters. The are very light weight. After you get your Lott sighted in I would check it on a regular basis. It will let you know if your scope goes south. I would also have 2 scopes sighted in with QD mounts on every hunt.
Not a bad idea on any "traveling" hunting rifle.
Tell us more about your Lott. Big Grin

I don't know about the current Weavers, I do know the old k60 B & C series would take a beating. Used one on .505 Gibbs by Hoffman, Barnes Supreme .450 and hot loaded .416 Rigbys.
Now, I never put a 1000 rounds through any one, but maybe that many all together on a "C" series

A fixed power scope is a good idea on the Lott. I don't know qabout the Weaver but the Leup. 2X is a beast & should hold up well.

No, but I blew the guts out of a 3X Leupold on a 458 Lott, along with a Swaroski, 1.5x5 Leupold, weaver 4X, Burris and Kahles and some others some years ago...

I am of the firm opinnion that the Leupold 2.5 compact is the only scope that can take a steady diet of the 458 Lott and pretty much proved that to myself and Leupold...Leupold was the only company that gave me satisfactory service and finally gave up and gave me a 2.5X compact free of charge, got tired of repairing scopes....

The other thing to remember is when you use a brake on a 458 Lott, you just multiplied the scope problem 10 fold....

Fortunatly most Lotts reside in gun cabinets and are reserved for bragging rights or they are sighted in and seldom shot more than at one buffalo and a good scope may last up to 250 rounds, most die at less than 50 has been my experience, and the experience of David Miller, Sutton and other who have pinned on this subject...

If i still had a Lott I would opt for a good ghost peep dovetailed into the receiver and filed to zero with a NECG .007 high partridge front sight....A Lott has a limited long range trajectory that I feel a peep sight suits it fine...It is used primarily for buff and elephant at close rage, 200 yards would be a very long shot on buff but easy to do as you have a lot of bullseye on a buff...

I have a Kahles 1.1-4 on one of my Lotts and so far it has lasted 100 to 150rds or so and hasn't broken yet. So far the Leupy 1.5-5 has gone away yet on my other Lott but it's only had 30-40rds through it so far................DJ

I have had good luck with Leupold Vari-X 3 (now VX-3) 1.5-5 scopes on 416 Rigbys and 458 Lotts. One scope has seen 100+ rounds on a #1 Lott and another couple hundred on my RSM Lott. I guess we'll see the durability of this scope as I intend to put another 200+ rounds through the Lott this spring.

However, if I was scoping a 505 or 550 I would probably try a fixed Leup 2.5. That being said I am fighting the urge to try a 3.5-10 on my Lott for my spring ground squirrel shoot!

I wouldn't even consider a SCOPE.
Get a RED DOT.
Trijicon or Aimpoint.

My point is HOW to USE it.
Not just how often, or IF you ever do...

I don't are if you keep it in the cabinet, closet, or whatever.
It's WHEN you use it, you'll know HOW to use it!

Well a 458 LOTT or a 460Weath. is not too friendly to the scope... Wink

I have a Swarovski 1,25-4x24 but you should think about the new Schmidt&Bender Zenith!

The Distance to your eyes is pretty good. 9cm...

I agree with Ray, and have put about 600 rounds through my .458 Lott. The first scope on it was a Leupold 1.5x5 that died at about 150 rounds. The 2.5x leupold compact now on the rifle has done well so far. I also have a Talley peep on the rifle as a backup.

I went through 3 scopes on my Lott before I put a 2.5X Leupold on it. After almost 100 rnds. it is still working. I believe it is the scope that D. Echols recommends for the Lott. I should add that although I have shot 5 eles with it, I never use a scope for them.
