I am in the market for a trails guide rifle and might be able to buy a FN Magnum Mauser 505 Gibbs.

Would like to see who here has a 505, what loads you are using and possibly share some photos of the rifles as well as trophies taken...

I would be a little dubious of an FN Magnum .505 Gibbs. The action would have to be greatly modified to handle that cartridge. And some things, like the bolt diameter, annot be modified.

My first ,505 was not a Gibbs, but a wildcat of my own design, with which I took rhino, elephant and buffalo. It performed in a totally satisfactory manner. I now have a .505 Gibbs as well, but it has not been to Africa.

I prefer a heavier bullet than the classic Gibbs load, a .510" 570 grain Kynoch bullet swaged down to .505" at 2150 fps. It accounted for all of the above animals. Sorry I can't give you any loads for the Gibbs, but there are plenty of sources for that on the web.

I have a CZ 505 Gibbs that I have had work peformed upon by the CZ custom shop and another shop. It has a 22" barrel and I use 600 gr. Woodleigh softs and solids @ 2150fps. It weighs 9.5 lbs. I have not taken any game with it yet. I very much like it.

Your FN Mauser might make a lovely 500 Jeffery, but if your heart's set on a 505 Gibbs go for it. I have a lovely CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. It shoots .5 MOA with 570g TSX bullets at 2300 fps. Recoil is mild

Regards,

Chuck

Thank you all for the feedback.

Thank you for the lovely rifle photos.

Chuck,

Thats a great looking Jeff and it sounds like its a tacdriver as well.

I build a 500 Jeff a few years ago but sold it.

I have always liked the two "500" classic bolt rifle calibers and would realy love it if I can get my hands on this 505 Gibbs.

I got a great deal on a CZ first gen .505 and could not resist. Not sure it had ever been fired. Had a loose crossbolt and could not find a adapter that fit it so I sent it back to triple river. They ended up working action for feeding and rebedded the stock and reblue and overall checkup. Said they learned some stuff after first gen. Sent it back to me. This first gen had the super huge barrel band which made a riser for the dovetailed express sights necessary. Pretty ugly but I guess that's all they had back then. This also only allowed a tiny front sight. I talked to triple river and said how do I get a bigger front sight, since this is a 50 yard gun and want a fiber optic and a white. They said no way to do it but send it back. So I did and the redid the barrel band and removed the spacer. Now it's ready to go to Montana to AHR to get really spruced up. Waiting for this elephant situation to sort of so I can plan a hunt around the rifle. Found some good deals on loaded ammo so I have plenty of ammo and cases for something.....Big and nasty.......Had trouble finding an ammo belt so I ended up with a murray setup. Pretty sweet stuff. I wanted triple river to put the popup peep on it but they said impossible on the 505. And the NECG won't work so It's and express sight rifle. May add a sighting device I like the sound of the "scout" setup (have it on a lever guide gun) but need to find out how to get it machined from Wayne. I believe I will use a lead sled if I shoot it from bench. All offhand so far and not that unpleasant. The old sight setup had a loose hood on front sight. Boy that thing flew a long way, found it on a roof a building behind me. That was funny

I am very impressed with TRG warranty work. Plus they said if the stock ever cracked that will be covered as well. Rest assured you will be well taken care of by Harlan at the CZ custom shop

I just have a crappy Ruger RSM. Smiler

130 gr. IMR 4831, 525 gr. Woodleigh FMJ
130 gr. IMR 4831, 525 gr. Woodleigh Weldcore SN
130 gr. IMR 4831, 525 gr. Barnes TSX FB
131 gr. RL 22, 525 gr. Barnes TSX

At 2,200 fps, it's a pussycat, unlike my .500 A-Square. Wink
