We have only about five confirmed members of the .600 club at this time. We need more to get the 20% discount from Pac-Nor.
In addition, I have talked to Ed Plummer at AHR and he will provide the gunsmithing necessary to make the .600 Overkill play. I know Ed quite well and trust his work. They are experts on the CZ550 and even import the actions for sale by Brownells. Ed says they will charge an hourly rate for the gunsmithing which isn't all that much. I'd say this is a major step foreward. ED also will handle getting Brass made by Bruce Bertram. If we want, we can also have some made by Horneber, but it should be fine as this case design really has few places where things can go wrong as compared to the NYATI. I'm sure ED would also build complete rifles if anyone wanted that done.-Rob

Rob,

I am keen, I sort of wish you could give another few weeks follwing your arrival back from your hunting trip. I do want a barrel but I am on the verge of having to pay for my completed .585 barrelled action and stock.

Man, I'd really love to join the club, RGB, but I just extended my credit to the max getting hooked up with an Mbogo (thanks to 470's persuasiveness and excellent taste in rifles!).

I am not even sure if it is OK to bring 600's into Canada, but I'd guess that it is. It would be the ultimate range toy. You could probably make your money back by charging suckers $10 a shot at local R&G Club shoots. [Smile]

Rob, so I take it these barrels are going to be set up for BRNO's? When are you back from Africa and when do you want the money? As with a lot of posters, my gun budget only stretches so far each month. Take care - Dan

Rob,

Is it possible to extend the "admission" window until late Sept or Oct? I for one am in no hurry, and I have noticed a pattern of people who want "in" but needed more time themselves. Maybe we could hit a "dirty dozen" into the club if we could give them some more time?? You know they say good things come to those who wait. Is there a timeline issue here that we are not aware of? Just curious. I would like to see as many people get in on this as possible, you know group suffering or whatever you prefer to call it?

Oh heck- The way I normally get things done is set a ridgid timeline and then stick to it. Just my training! I don't have any real issues about when we set it. Probably Oct is fine ,but let's set one or we will procrastinate forever. I hate waiting for anything, thats why I got into building my own guns in the firstplace! I think what we should do is nearly simultaneously each send our specific order to Pac-Nor and make sure that they give us the .600 project discount. This way we can all deal directly with Pac-Nor. I will provide the reamer and headspace guages and they can go from there. They usually take about two months to make the barrels so if we say Oct 15th is the date, then we can pretty much expect them in mid to late Dec. In the interim I'm going to work on the brass situation. Does that seem reasonable?-Rob

Rob: How about putting all the info in one place, like here?
[Big Grin]

How much it's going to run, for each component, and the cost for each rifle. Options, etc.

For instance, I would like a threadable brake, maybe(I can't see firing this without a brake, though) and, depending upon cost, would be my way to swing one way or another?

The brass is also a concern.

I'm kind of wobbling between your new gun, and a
458 AI improved.

Anyway, It would be nice to know, ahead of time, what the costs are going to be, and where we can get dies, etc. for reloading?

Anybody load ammo of this size, and is anyone willing to do it?

OK, all you'ze recoil junkie type guys...Rob has graciously extended the deadline for this smoking deal of a shoulder fired howitzer. Let's see some of the "fence sitters" that have wanted more time ante up and get in on this deal. You can buy the barrel first, and then work out the rest of the gun and components later if you need to "spread out" the damage. You will never be able to get into a custom, sickly recoiling howitzer any cheaper than this. Come on and sign up, let's hear from you! This is going to be an historic AR forum event, don't miss out!

The more the merrier and cheaper not just for the barrels but also I imagine for the brass, bullets and dies. I sure look forward to seeing this thing in action [Big Grin]

Paul,

That would be great to have you in on this as well. I have liked following your load work on the 480 Ruger project, and would look forward to comparing load development with you on this honker. Sure hope you can make it happen!

PC,

Yeah, a guide gun would be ok as long as it were converted to be a controlled feed.

I might also consider getting rid of the guide gun's exposed hammer and converting it to double action only.

So folks what is the new deadline now to be in on the barrel order ??

I have to evaluate my cash position and find out if I opt in for the barrel were the cash is coming from as I just paid the largest of my bills for my .585 Nyati which is near completion, this included a $1650AUS gunsmithing bill & $1064AUS bill for the bloke who is making my stock. These figures did not include the cost of barrel, action, dies etc.

I think all you folk with inquiring minds are total bastards for inventing this [Wink] , you all sucked me in to spend my cash building a .585 Nyati and now you un-veil the .600 OK. I think you have all purposely conspired against me [Big Grin]

500 could not have a push feed now could we [Wink]

PC,

The deadline has been pushed back to Oct. 15th. That gives you a over a month and a half to figure it out. Hope you can join us! It would figure that with a sickly recoiling cannon project like this, there would have to be a few Aussies in on it. [Big Grin] [Razz]

Sooner,

Glad you could join in on the "fun". Rob will be out of country on safari until the first of Sept., but your e-mail will welcome him home. As far as details, read over this thread, and the "Pictures of the 600 Overkill" thread, most of the info is laid out there for you. Post back to this thread with questions if you would, to try to get it all pooled into one place. Welcome to the club.

Big Bores, I am going to try and pony the money up for a barrel in the first instance. If I purchase a barrel I will probably sit on the rest of the project for a while. The only other things I would get would be the brass & dies.

The other issue is I am really hankering for one of the soon to be released AR30M .338 Lapua Mag rifles by Armalite as well as a .375 H&H which I still have not got and bloody well should have [Big Grin]

One thing I try to do in my firearm purchases is to always buy rifles of different uses. For example I have just invested in a big bore stomper (.585) and now I want a tactical rifle in the .338. Next year I will build a 6.5x55. I am attempting to cover as many variations in caliber as I possibly can.

PFD already long gone! I'm also working on a 50 project, 500 Jeffrey, but, I'm having a hard time passing up this deal. For ~$250 I get the barrel and put asside for another day.

PC,

I hope it works out for you. My 2 cents is never mind the Lapua. You could have the only tactical .600 in Australia. Think about it. Fame, fortune, all could be yours! [Big Grin]

KMule,

Hope you can work it out. Nothing wrong with pb and J's. I assure you the only way I can get in on it myself is because it's so damn cheap to begin with. As it was said earlier, you can go with just a barrel, first and the rest later. I plan on barrel, dies and brass up front, and hope to get the rifle put together right after the first of the year. I also think I want a custom (walnut, of course) wood stock carved for it, just to do it up right. Although originally I was thinking of shooting it with the factory "hogs back" stock for a while. Should have seen the look on my 'smith's face when I told him what I was up to. Pretty funny!

Rob has also worked out a mold for cast bullets, should make it a lot cheaper to shoot than just plinking with woodleigh's. I might put off my 35 Whelen project and build this one first. Nothing like starting off at the top of the food chain, if you will! [Eek!]

Now that you have shattered my belief that my .404 Jeffery was a "Big bore", and have trampled my desire to build a .500 Jeffery as my "ultimate stopper" how much is this monster REALLY going to cost? barrel, action, stock, sights, brass, bullet mold gunsmithing and the works. Its probably more than I SHOULD spend, perhaps more than I CAN spend, But now I REALLY WANT ONE!!!!

If one must pay for gun smithing I would reckon between 1000-1500US for people in America. For us Aussies a project like this finshed will cost about $5000AUS. I am just working on what it costs for a .585 Nyati that includes brass, action, dies, barrel etc.

I do not think a scope would be any good on this monster, I think maybe the .585 Nyati is the limit for scopes. If I finish up getting a barrel I will sit on the project for a long time.

Richard,

Some of this stuff is still "up in the air", as far as costs of dies and brass...

Figure a new CZ 550 rifle "donor" for the project ~$650-700, Barrel ~$325 (with brake if your mortal), fitting barrel and making it feed ~$250-300, dies ~$120-150, brass ~?, incidentals ? (~ means approximately)

Now some of this is pretty subjective, like buying a new CZ rifle over having one on hand, stock work is pretty wide open depending on what you want, and I don't think the brass has been nailed down yet.

Read the "Pictures of the 600 overkill thread for Robs thoughts on gunsmithing, as well as where dies can come from. I'm sure more info will be availible once Rob comes back from safari and has a couple of days to sort himself out.

For a custom wildcat super-cannon, that still comes out to very dirt cheap! I have spent as much on a custom M70 deer rifle! [Frown]

Figure somewhere between US$2.50 to $5.00 per piece for brass.

Probably $150 for dies.

$385 for barrel.

$500 to $750 for metal work (gunsmithing).

$500 to $1000 for a reasonable stock.

$650 for a CZ550 receiver from Brownell's.

That is just $2950 at the high end.

Then you just have to add components and go shooting.

Hell, Garrett gets that much for a model 700 with a plastic stock!!

This is a steal.
