Let's start a thread where newcomers to the African and Alaskan can post their typical accuracy from the Ruger Hawkeye. Please note the bullet and wt.

My Alaskan: Factory 270g Hornady average 1.0 to 1.25 for three shots.

What does yours do?

The only reason you blokes got those groups was because the barrel cooled off between chambering and extraction problems. Big Grin

I too got about 1.25 MOA for 3-shots at 100 yards with the 270-grain factory ammo in the African, straight out of the box.

I then bedded the rifle in an HS Precision stock and it gave about 0.75 MOA with the same ammo and Leupold scope.

When I get around to handloads, I will top Gatehouse, but his group is tops for now. thumb

270gr Factory ammo:

The load work up for the 260gr load went well, kept getting smaller groups till I hit 84gr, which is .5gr more than Hornady data for 270gr bullets.

I fired a few groups wiht it and they were all nice clover leafs, all pretty small.

I don't doubt RIP can beat that group, Ijust figured that since I was consitently getting good groups...well, I may as well quit, since any more isn't going to matter in a hunitng situation Big Grin

I've got some TSX bullets to try, and I also made a reduced load wiht 200gr flat point 3785 Winchester bullets. Good for grouse, I think Big Grin

My first 3 shot group with my 375 Ruger African was with the 270gr factory ammo and it printed 1.25".

I haven't shot any other ammo or reloads for groups yet.

Cheers,
Canuck

I've got a bunch of GSC HV and FN bullets in .375-caliber, 265, 270, and 300-grain HV and FN's. Those may be the tool to top Gatehouse if it is possible. Wink

I've got about 35 leftover GSC 265gr HVs to try...I am betting they will prefer the 12" twist of my Ruger over the 14" twist of my ex-mod 70.

I intend to try them at the range tomorrow, but the weather is not cooperating (70 km/hr winds and 2 deg C at the moment, with more of the same forecast for tomorrow).

Cheers,
Canuck

I just drive my stuck cases out of the chamber with a cleaning rod and a mallet. It's really no big deal. Wink

Could not try them at the range...weather was too crappy. Hopefully I can sneak out one day this week, but with the time change its dark at 5:30 PM now, so....maybe on the weekend after a morning deer hunt.

The GSC's do look sexy in that Ruger case. And they are short enough (larger ogive radius?, like an A-frame) that you can play with seating depth a little better than the TSXs or protected point bullets.

And I have more than I thought....almost 50. Big Grin

Cheers,
Canuck

Hey, check out this 375 Ruger load data from RealGuns.com...shot from a 23" African Hawkeye..

You can find it here...http://www.realguns.com/loads/375Ruger.htm

I thought I might be the first to try the 265gr HV in a 375 Ruger!! NOT!

I am surprised a bit that they got 3000fps with it though! WOW. I will have to see if I can duplicate that. My loads are 74 and 75gr of RL 15...looks like I have a little room to go up from there.

COOL. Cool

I still can't believe 3000 fps with a 265gr bullet. That should rock.

Cheers,
Canuck

Yeah..great articles Mike. Just found them at the same time as the data. Some pretty great info and some very quotable quotes for the 375 Ruger enthusiast! Might have to drag some out for the other threads. Big Grin

Gates,

I noticed their numbers with the 260 AB are pretty high too, but considering the extra 3 inches of barrel they may be realistic compared to yours. 2900 fps with a 260 AB would be pretty damn deadly, eh?

I was sceptical about his numbers, but reading his articles detailing his load testing process gives me some faith...talk about attention to detail!

Cheers,
Canuck

Oh, don't worry...I'm not the one that has never shot a 375 Ruger over a chrono but somehow knows that it won't make advertised velocities. Big Grin

What kind of trigger pull do the Hawkeye 375R rifles have?

Does anyone know if there are any aftermarket triggers being offered for the new Hawkeye rifles?

I think the 375 Ruger is a wonderfully designed case..no belt and will work fine in a std. length action..That is what everyones been crying for over the last couple of decades a USA beltless magnum, now the same whiners are scoffing at it! homer

I would not run out and sell my 375 H&H to buy a Ruger but if I were just getting into big bores I would sure buy the Ruger..

I did build myself a 416/375 Ruger and its on my desk as we speak, but sans a stock so far.

Triggers are better, and mine is now perfect after I sent it to one of my favorite gunsmiths and had him smooth it for me...Best $30 I ever spent!

Gatehouse, is your the African or Alaskan? I noticed some velocity numbers you shared and am trying to frame my expectations. Mine is the Alaskan.

Also, anyone know a good smith near Portland, Oregon. Mine of many years has retired?

A couple fun pics...

Just to show how sexy the 375 Ruger looks with the 270gr TSX and 265gr GSC HV...

Hornady 300gr solid, Hornady 300gr soft, Hornady 270gr SP, Barnes 270gr TSX, GSC 265gr HV.

For comparison, a bevy of 375's (and a 9.3 thrown in for good measure)...

9.3x64, 375 Ruger, 375 H&H, 375 UAE, 375 RUM, 378 Wby.

Cheers,
Canuck
