I just acquired a .458 Ruger #1 and it seems to shoot real well. I would appreciate any bonified loads that will hit over 2100fps with 500 gr bullets particularily with ww748. I saw in Hornady'd book that they claim you can go up to 2150 with 80.4 grs of WW748, but other load sources say max is 76 grs. What gives?

The Barnes manual lists all max loads going well over 2100 fps. The highest velocity was 2208 with 60.0 grains of RL7. The max listed on 748 is 75.0 grains for 2189. Other powders used were H4198 (62.0 max) and IMR 4895 (72.0 max). This data was in a 24" Shilen barrel.

You're only realistic option is to take a couple of powders and the bullet you like and work your way up using a chronograph.....simply taking a load from a book and assuming a velocity in your rifle is risky at best. One other thing.....Aliant has recently changed production of RL7 and I would be suspicious of any load for that powder published more than 2 years ago. It is a good powder for the 458 but I would e-mail Aliant for their latest suggested load.
