Head: Just measured my 416 Ruger Alaskan magazine box at the bottom just above the open floor plate at 3.435 inches. My 400 gr. Trophy Bonded solid is 3.320 OAL and the Swift A Frome load is 3.300 OAL. Since this is a Cape Buffalo rifle I determine the OAL by the crimping grooves on the individual bullets. I crimp with a Lee factory crimp die for the 416 Taylor since Lee does not have a 416 Ruger factory crimp die. The last thing I want in a dangerous game high recoiling rifle is a feeding malfunction caused by the rounds in the magazine jumping the crimp.
Head: Be advised that the 416 Ruger is very sensitive to feeding issues. The 400 gr. Hornady round nose fed fine but I had to smooth up the receiver rails and the sharp edge on the magazine box as well as polish the feed ramp to get the 400 gr. Trophy Bonded solids to feed. When you put the magazine box in a vise to smooth up the top edge do not tighten the vice even a smidgen to spring the paper thin side walls of the box. Check the top of the mag box for notches or nicks. If you find any do not remove any metal just get a new box from Ruger and only polish the top edge or the cartridge follower will pop up. Same caution for the rough investment cast follower. Ruger needs to reprogram their CNC machine on the Ruger 77 production line for a little tighter tolerances so the customer can fix what should never have left the factory.
My experience with both the 375 and 416 Ruger is much the same as those here. I agree that the sharp edges on the feed rails, bolt face and especially the chamber mouth, need to be smoothed. and the recoil on my daughter's 375 eventually beats the top front of the magazine box until it eventually becomes bent enough to cause feeding problems. It may simply be due to the fact that hers is in one of the Ruger tupperware stock off of a 30-06 and they are relatively soft stocks. I have not seen the problem in my son's or any of my guides rifles that are in wood, Hogue or McMillan stocks.
And I make sure to use Lee factory crimp dies on all my 375 and larger ammo.

My Ruger Hawkeye magazine gets beaten to a pulp, too. But I rechambered from a 375Ruger to a 500 AccRel. The front end of the magazine needs reinforcing so that there is less play between the magazine and the front of the action-well/stock and so that the magazine itself is stronger.

Tanoose: The 80018 number when entered on the the Lee website comes up as a 9mm Luger die set. To the best of my knowledge, the Lee rifle factory crimp die part numbers begin with 90xxx. When I checked the Lee website today they are still showing the 416 Remington as the only factory crimp die in 416 caliber. It will not crimp a 416 Ruger because I tried before purchasing the 416 Taylor factory crimp die that Lee was selling on a closeout of custom crimp dies.
I just purchased both the 375 and 416 Ruger crimp dies and they were still custom dies and I had to send in loaded examples ( no powder or primer of course) Before that I was using 416 Rem crimp dies on the Ruger and Rigby rounds. All you have to do is to hold them in the die upside down while you crimp them.
