After a long time away, I am back and stumbled across a rifle that some of you may find interesting. http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=8049013 "I can't be over gunned because the animal can't be over dead"-Elmer Keith

Joe, there is an advisory against posting links to auction sites, but perhaps that only applies to ones own items. In any case, I have NO desire to shot a 600 grain bullet at 2550 fps! Peter. As far as I know the request to not post links to auction sites applies to the classifieds section only. As to 600 grains at 2,550.....I'm not part gorilla so I'll just pass this time. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." According to other data I have seen on the round, 2550fps is very enthusiastic. Considering it is based on the 460 wby case, I have trouble seeing how it can out run other rounds such as the .505 Gibbs. A-Square claims that their 500 A-Square has a velocity of 2346 with a 600 grain slug. Unless my memory fails me, the A-Square round and the 510 Wells are very similar rounds. Perhaps someone here with a better understanding of the 510 Wells could chime in and offer some data. "I can't be over gunned because the animal can't be over dead"-Elmer Keith

I'm no .500 expert but there are 2 things I don't like on that rifle the "brake' and the butter knife bolt handle. On a Dangerous game rifle it seems that a knob on the bolt to grab would be comforting and I hate "brakes". The rest of that rifle seems appealing except the thought of touching it off!

I shot A2 .500 two times. I would not be able to after that. The second shot was only so they wouldn't call me a sissy.

I really hate brakes on a rifle, but in this case, I think it is a necessity!!!

The first thing I wonder about this rifle is what TWIST is the barrel? The .510 Wells is a slightly smaller capacity cartridge than the 500 A2. You can fire .510 Wells ammo in a 500A2 but the bolt will not close if you try to stick a fully formed 500 A2 cartridge into a .510 Wells chamber. Max average pressure of the 500 A2 is listed as 63,860 psi. In a 26" barrel of 10" twist, A-Square lists: 600-grain Dead-Tough RNSP 117.0 grains of H4895 A-Square brass CCI 250 primer 2527 fps 64,000 psi (140 psi over max) 2500 fps with 600-grainer is maxing out the 500 A-Square in a 26" barrel. Maybe the .510 Wells in the ad has a 15" twist barrel and is hence capable of getting pressures that are about one quarter of one percent less for similar velocities as the 10" twist.

Gee, I was more concerned about thickness of that recoil pad. If you are thinking about it make sure to ask about hearing protection.

Peter, We ask people not to post links to auctions in which they have the same items posted in the classified. There is no problem with posts like this one.

Thanks Saeed. I noticed that he only had two posts, so I was trying to help out. I stand corrected. peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

Peter, I have only a few posts under this name, due to the loss of my old identity. With that name I had several hundred. "I can't be over gunned because the animal can't be over dead"-Elmer Keith

"EMPIRE ANNOUNCES THE NEW .505 EMPIRE Empire Rifles has a well established reputation as a versatile maker with several specialties, one of which is big bore rifles. As Terry Wieland recently pointed out in RifleShooter Magazine (Nov/Dec 2006, p. 40), Empire Rifles makes a significant number of .50 caliber dangerous game rifles in .500 Jeffery. Terry alludes to a new cartridge from Empire Rifles. . . “If one were setting out today to design the perfect .500 caliber bolt action cartridge, I would vote for a scaled-up .458 Lott based on the .378 Weatherby Case. . . You want a bolt action .500 to match the power of the double-rifle .500 Nitro Express: a 570 grain bullet at 2,100 fps. If a rifle will do that, it’s a winner.†Existing .500 cartridges have a couple of drawbacks, some real, some imagined. The drawback of the .505 Gibbs is it’s sheer size, which requires an extra long 3.9†action and a fat .750 diameter bolt. Moreover, many hunters are concerned about the rebated rim on the .500 Jeffery --a concern I do not share. What began as a simple conversation about the .505 Gibbs evolved into the design of the .505 Empire, delivering .505 Gibbs velocities in a package fitting neatly into Empire’s Mauser actions. Excellent bullets are available from several makers, notably Barnes and Woodleigh. The .505 Empire launches a 600 grain bullet at 2,150 fps for a TKO of 93.06 –slightly ahead of the redoubtable .500 NE The cartridge design is simple: Weatherby magnum brass, straight taper to .505 Caliber, with a 3.6†COL. Fits in the Empire 98L and 98S actions with their 0.700 diameter bolts. Although the cartridge achieves 2,250 fps with a 600 grain bullet, we load it down to 2,150 fps, generally considered the ideal velocity for a stopping rifle, and within the recommended impact velocity for the Woodleigh bullet. This equals the velocity of the renowned 500 NE (3â€) with 30 more grains of bullet weight. While the .505 Gibbs was traditionally loaded with 525 grain bullets, the caliber comes into its own with a 600 grain bullet at moderate velocity. Like the .505 Gibbs, the .505 Empire will drive the lighter 525 grain bullets close to 2,400 fps. The 600 grain bullet at 2,150 fps yields momentum of 129 lbs/ft and a Taylor Knock Out value of 93.06 –values which are significantly higher than the excellent .458 Lott, and in the good company of the .500 Jeffery, the .505 Gibbs, and the .500 NE. I put little stock in kinetic energy, but for those who do this cartridge generates 6,158 lbs. Both hunting ammunition and low velocity (read low recoil) practice loads will be available from Superior Ammunition. I am looking forward to using the .505 Empire on Cape Buffalo next Summer! Please call George on 603.469.3152 to discuss this exciting new cartridge." As can be seen from the above quote, it appears that getting 2550 from this combination is a bit of a difficult task. Be interesting to actually measure the vel and see if you can get 2550, but this someone other than me doing the shooting!!!

RIP- You really should quit licking your TWIST wounds. Your wrong, admit it and go take two drinks on me. Rob, You have already admitted that a twist faster than 15" is best for the slow-poke 500 A2 shooting those 2.5" long 750-grain A-Max. Remember? No wounds here. Thanks for the unwarranted concern anyway.

Hey, I've got something for you to twist right here B'yotch!! Sorry my juvenile delinquent Teret's(sp) syndrome personality disorder just reared it's ugly head. The rifle in questions looks fairly well executed . Not my cup of tee however.
