Is there any semi automatic rifles in bigger calibers? I have heard of a browning bar in caliber .458 win
Is it possible to make a semi automatic in bigger calibers like the .500 .585 .600?
I know that the browning action just van take shorter cases but can any one build a bigger action?

Thanks!

Overkill,

I have shot a semi auto rifle in 30/06.

I know that Browning bar and some Garand M1 are chambered in .338 Win Mag.

If you want to shoot herd of elephants in short time I seen an interrrest in a semi-auto like that, in all other cases any interrests at all in such as rifle.

You'll save your money and your time in thinking about something more realistic [Cool]

While only in the .45-70 power class, the semi auto's built on the AR-15 such as the .458 SOCOM
http://www.tromix.com/Tromix_458.htm and http://www.teppojutsu.com/contact.htm with the later company also working on a .476 and .512 semis built on the AR-10. Then there is the .50 Beowulf
http://www.alexanderarms.com/hsg.html built also on the AR-15. For something to really rock and roll with, the Barrett 82-A1 .50 BMG and the new Cobb that is very similar in looks to the AR-15 but in .50 BMG. http://www.cobb50.com/

Lots of options to play with if money is not an option.

Several years ago, I believe the early to mid 70's, Jack Lott wrote an article in Guns and Ammo about converting a Browning BAR into a .458. Also someone else did the same but in .416 Taylor. I thought I had the article but haven't been able to find it yet. If I do I will post the issue that it is in and be willing to send anyone who wants it a photocopy of the article.

Overkill - It all depends on what is legal where you live. Here in Texas, we can hunt "non-game animals" such as feral hog using suppressed M-16s if we chose to do so. Tony at Tromix has a picture of his deer stand, showing the protruding barrel of one of his M1919A4s with the belt hanging out of the "window". That said, the .458 SOCOM has been chambered in AK-47, AR-15, Mauser and Remington actions. Any action that can accept the .308 rim size could potentially be modified to fire the .458 SOCOM.

The Remington 7400 was factory made in .35 Whelen and these occasionally show up on auctionarms and gunbroker for sale. This would not be a bad brown bear rifle for those afraid they can't pump a 7600 in the same calibre fast enough.

You are right about the BAR in .458 Win. Mag. It was built from a BAR in .338, but it was not a factory job, it was a rebarrelled conversion. Worked OK, according to the maker. Forgot who did it, was maybe 30 years ago.

A big bore semi-auto? How about a Barrett .50 BMG?? Big enough? Or maybe a Lahti 20mm antitank rifle??

Boddington mentions a Browning BAR in .458 win mag in his book Safari Rifles. Sounds like a cool idea to me,but than again it does not take much to get me interested in a new gun!!!!!

My neighbor gunsmith Bob Snapp made up a
458 on a BAR that started as a 338 years ago.
Beutiful job.Saw it once, but don't remember
who got it.I guess we could take a Barrett
50 cal auto and rebarrel to 700HE....Better add weight for rapid fire...Ed.

Keep in mind that some countries in Africa and elsewhere don't allow importation of semiauto rifles, that would kind of eliminate the need for a semiauto big bore for hunting. I guess anything I'd want to hunt with a big bore rifle, I'd feel better pulling the bolt myself, especially with handloads.
