Well since Overkill was talking about his moose, I figured I would tell you about my buffalo. As some my recall, a while ago I was asking bout the wisdom of using a 50 Beowulf to shoot a water buffalo. Most everyone agreed it was unwise to do so. Since I am a fool of sorts, this consensus made me, just do it, Nike commercials helped too! I loaded up the 50 Beowulf with 334 gr Rainer "fmj" bullets, which in wood penetration tests easily blasted through 18" of solid rail road tie, and went down south to get me a water buffalo. The rifle was loaded with a 10 round magazine, that would be a 30 round mag in 223, and a holosight. I get all set-up at the 'ranch' and we head out to the field in the pick-up truck. We spot our quarry about a 1/4 mile from the 'base camp' and dismount the truck. I take careful aim at my quarry with my trusty AR, now at the dangerously close range of 15 yards, and bang I shoot the water buffalo squarely in the head. The bullet struck right between the eyes and about 1"-2" above the 'eye line'. Down he drops like 1800 pounds of bovine. We load the buffalo up in the pick-up truck, with a little help from a front end loader, everyone should have one of these following them around on a BIG game hunt, and we head off to the processor. We find the bullet, not mashed too badly either surprisingly enough, at the shoulder to neck junction. I would estimate the penetration at 2.5' - 3'. I must admit this 'hunt' was really strenuous and took it out of me. However, with this physical conditoning completed I am now ready to go after the damned crop destroying whitetail deer in a month and a half. What shocked me was the fact that this wimpy rifle actually out-penetrated the 500 Jeffery I witnessed shooting bison. The expansion of the Beowulf bullet was not nearly as great as the Jeffery, but neither is the energy level, sectional density, or recoil . Does a water buffalo have a 'soft skull' compared to a bison? Or, is this all due to bullet types, velocity, etc, etc? Kent [ 10-09-2003, 20:20: Message edited by: Kent in IA ]

Kent, Surprising penetration, and an enjoyable tale!!! I don't have any thing real to say about the 500 jeffe, except that it COULD have been 1800fps with hawk bullets.. but that still should have goen far.... read www.470mbogo.com on camparing the bigbores for some results jeffe

Kent- Try 37.5 grs of Lil-Gun powder over the 330gr AA bullet. My gun is sub-Moa with this load and NO UNBURNED powder! Did you ever get a accu-wedge for your AR?-Rob

jeffeosso, thanks for the heads-up on that link. Interesting data. Lars, I visited an establishment down in Missouri. Not much of a hunt. I left out that the 1/4 mile drive was the long way to get to the animal. I wasn't too impressed by the place so I won't mention any names. Heck the only reason I went was the price was right and I wanted to see how this rifle performed on game. Planning on going hog hunting next. Did I mention how much I enjoy killing hogs? Robgunbuilder, yes I did get an accuwedge for the rifle. You were right about it improving the accuracy, too. Rifle is printing around 1" - 1.5" now at 100 yards off the bench. I haven't been seeing lil' gun on the shelf around here much lately, but I plan on trying it and H110. This little gun is a hoot to experiment around with since it so damned cheap to shoot. Kent- I actually have a bunch of tricks for the AR I've picked up over the years I'll share with you. They can be made to be unbelievably accurate! Recently I picked up a foreward grip assembly at some gun show and put it on mine. You would not believe how well it handles in .50 Beowulf. Good show on the Buff by the way!-Rob

Kent - what a big game hunter you are! I'll bet this was your first time hunting ever. It was wasn't it? Come on big boy fess up and admit it. Oh yeah, that wasn't hunting, you do realize that don't you??? Get a real hunting rifle too, while you're at it. Assault rifles are for hunting animals with, IMHO. Robgunbuilder - are you delusional? ================================================== Damn- Judy you and ToddE are so predictable! You don't think your being manipulated do you? Yum Yum Bait! Oh I know your just a poor woman abused by the evil hunters! Not!- Your old pal -Rob ================================================== Whatever are you talking about? I am not ToddE, a fact, which has time and again been stated by various forum moderators. I find it nearly impossible to believe any of you have been baitng me, unless of course you have been baiting me for the last several years. As I said, that is highly unlikely, since I have only posted here for about a year. Please, though, post some examples of this baiting. Finally, I don't feel abused by any hunters. I feel harrassed by a few JERKS! Kent - what's the matter, having problems dealing with reality like the other jerks? [ 10-11-2003, 17:18: Message edited by: Judy ]

I think Kent made is suffiently clear that he knew this to be a shoot, and wrote it, tounge in cheek, that it was a hunt. Too bad that someone with limited field experience, and all of that being a SHOOTER, would not know how to read that. it was a great story kent... and the little extra fertilizer may help it grow.... Judy, 2 questions, if you please 1: are you still presenting yourself as a doctor? 2: are you still presenting yourself as Todd's Wife? jeffe

I am not Todd's wife! Never was and never will be. Actually, I am currently single. He may have written it tongue and cheek, as you say, but I bet it was his first time shooting an animal. Kinda like you jeffeosso, no real hunting experience, just cyber-speak.

Kent, To answer your question the water buffalo such as I believe you shot, wich is not the same as the Austrailian species, does have a very soft skull compared to a Bison...about like a regular cow...the cape Buffalo is the hard skulled one and you have a huge boss to boot in case he gets close enough to have to shoot down into it.. You got excellent penitration, and congratulations on your hunt but I would bet many dollars that gun won't out penitrate a 500 Jefferys or a 404 for that matter...Just does not make since, Look at the difference in size of the case and the amount of powder each will hold and keep in mind the big dog sleeps on the poarch every time..

Judy, Your remarks to the man are uncalled for and rude, you have not clue as to his experience and besides its none of your business...He simply told of his hunt and the success he enjoyed with his rifle, thats still OK around here, and its a free country, thats whats great about it, your not the ruler!

The AR-15 is one of the finest rifles available for hunting, IMO. It might not be conventional, but neither was the repeater 140 years ago, or the bolt action 70 years ago. Of course caliber/cartridge limit it's applications, but you will have a very hard time telling me you know of a better varmint rig. In some of it's other caliber configs, I can't think it would not be terrific for other applications.

Sorry Ray, but this man is just another jeffeosso, as far as I am concerned. Which, by the way, doesn't qualify as a man in my opinion, just an immense jerk! He attacked me on another thread so I am merely returning the favor. I still say, get a REAL rifle and hunt WILD game unfenced game!!!! [ 10-14-2003, 03:53: Message edited by: Judy ]
