Mauser in "460 caliber"
I have an opportunity to buy one. The fellow doesn't know how much it's worth and isn't all that interested in guns. He's offering it to someone I know for what seems a very cheap price. I've already said if it's a bona fide Czech or German sporter I'd take it sight unseen for this price. I also said I'd have to think about it a bit it there are WWII era military type stampings on it. If it was poorly cobbled together from a $30 surplus Mauser, I don't guess the stock and barrel together would fetch what he's asking. I'm intrigued, however.

One chance in a million (I think those are about the odds) that this is a left-handed Mauser that I could for-real do a lot of shooting with, but at the price I'm hearing, I would be looking at selling or trading for something I like.

I've no intention of ripping the guy off if he's got a truly valuable rifle, but if the asking price is a mere bargain, I'm going to buy it I think.

As a third possibility, what's a Charles Daly Yugoslavian Mauser in 460 Wby caliber worth?

A Charles Daly Mauser (max 3.65" COAL) will not fit a 460 wby (Max 3.8" IIRC).

Dan is right, with the exception that it would be less more work to put a 460 in a cz than it would be to have put a 416 rigby on one (3.72vs3.8")

I would say, if you think there's a 1 in 1,000,000 chance it's a lefty, then there's probably a 2 in the same that it's a 460 weatherby.

odds on, it's a 458 winchester, and not a bad round for that.

one picture of the left front ring will tell you loads of what it is, and then an over all pic..

a CD in 460 webby? hope it's got a nice stock, because it would have ZERO value to me, unless it had an Obie-type B stock on

Or it could be a custom (of whatever quality) 460 G&A or 460 G&A Short. The 460 G&A is 375-length and based on the 404 case. It was Jeff Cooper's choice for buff.

The 460 G&A Short is the same thing, but short enough to fit into a 30-06-length magazine. A 458 WM chamber may clean up to 460 G&A Short, but the rails might need work, and that's a job for a master.

Both are good rounds, about like the 458 Lott.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the information. So far, I am waiting on the seller to tell me more by way of my friend and intermediary. At this point, the seller seems eager to get rid of it at the stated price and is not concerned about parting with a valuable rifle for the price of a common one.

I've asked to know what's stamped on the barrel and receiver. I may get digital photos. The rifle's in another state.

...And it's sounding as if the rifle is a 460 Wby. One of the seller's issues with this rifle, that he doesn't know much about other than he wants to get rid of it, is that a box of shells is very expensive. I don't think he was quoted the price of a box of 460 G&A cartridges. Shucks. For a minute, I thought the rifle might be worth what he's asking just in interesting-ness. I'm still waiting to hear back what exactly he has. A pre-Mark V Weatherby maybe?

Jump on it real hard if it is, only 3 are known to exist.
