Numero uno is do the new A-square guys make brass for the 577 T.rex? And if so anyone know if it is better than the old stuff was?

Also has anyone gone ahead with building any of the other versions of Robs 600 overkill? eg wasn't there a longer case version on the cards at some stage?

And lastly what is the brass source most of you guys who are getting the 600's up and running?

Karl.

I can help on question numero tres. The source of 600 OK brass is Mr. Dieter Horneber himself. He should be making another run of big bore stuff around the first of the year I hear, so you may want to place your order early to be sure you get what you want.

Karl,
while the 550 is a good all around field gun for dino's, it's probably not the stopper for dino's that the 600 is...

The 550 mag and express use good ole 460 weatherby based brass... I lost ONE out of 50 just expanding 416 to .550 with a mandrel....

Sure, it's not the trex ON PURPOSE, as if one reads saeed's discussion on the trex, the followup shot isimpossible.

Buy your brass from Horneber.

It is far superior to A-Squares.

And as to clobbering old T.Rex, I have studied this fact extensively, and discovered that his brain is so tiny - other dinos nick named him the "politician" because of this.

One needs a very accurate rifle if one whishes to take a brain shot.

And if we can learn something from history, I would suggest you use a .275 Rigby, loaded with semi-wad cutter solids of 175 grains.

I have one rifle ready, just in case they re-surrect him before I go to the Happy Hunting Grounds.

As usual, I will post a full report of the hunt as soon as it is over.

(Walter is saying HE will write the report, as I will mostly certainly be stomped by old T.Rex)

Nice to have friends who have so much confidence in you ha?

Saeed,

Considering the significant bone mass that must be penetrated to reach that pea sized brain, I figured that I would utilize a 50 BMG with SLAP, or if that is not obtainable API ammunition. Of course if I am feeling nostalgic I would use the 55 Boyes, British you know.

Jeffe, have you got any especially good tricks for necking up? I use graphite on the expander ball, but the trouble I have is keeping the graphite stuck to the ball long enough to do any good. And it's sloppy. It seems to me that I am overlooking some basic, simple trick that everybody but me knows....

You could try Imperial Sizing Die Wax, very slick stuff. Sinclair's has it, Midway too, I think.

This may not really work for sizing up to T-Rex but I have been using a touch of Petroleum Jelly on my button for going from 338 to 416 in one step. It works very smoothly and cleans out when tumbling. Might work for you.

Rob,
Just caught your comment on the length of 600 OK brass. My brass is 3.0 inch and is drawn. The other sizes for the 600 OK-2, etc., 3.2, 3.4 inch, do these chamber in a GMA action? Doesn't seem that these long cases could chamber in a CZ action.

In necking up/down/inside out cases for wildcats I've tried this and found a decrease in case loss. Take a 35mm film canister (don't tell me everyone has gone digital?) and half-fill with everyday BBs. Add moly powder, put the lid back on (you know there is always one who won't), then shake the bejabbers out of it until the BBs are well coated. When resizing, stick the NECK of the case (again that one person) down into the canister. This will coat both inside and outside with enough moly for ease of expansion, etc.

Thanks for the replies.

My question was to see whether a necking down of Rob's Overkill cases might be on the cards yet.

First one in for the fastest 585 or 550?

Jeffe if a 550cal can hit 460 weatherby velocities it will then become a true dinosaur stopper.

Karl,
I think the mag can hit 2400 with a 600 gr.. perhaps 2500... but a 700 at 2300 will drill like no other round.. well, prehaps a pure lead falling of the reloading bench at garrett's, but everything else.

I've necked the .600 oK-1 down to .510 and the results are very promising. Kinda like a nasty 6PPC on steroids! Shot it at 1000 yrds and first time out a 5.5 inch group ( not in competition). Not bad. Recoil is non-existant. -Rob
