Ok, I want to start developing loads for my Win Model 70 .375 H&H using North Fork Solids.

In reviewing NF's website, I don't understand their two solid bullet options:

375-300 FPS $49.00

375-300 CPS $50.00

I'm not interested in remarks on other bullets, but rather the difference and preferences between the FPS and CPS bullets.

I've loaded and shot both of them, but have no direct experience with the differences in performance on game. If I understood what Mike at North Fork told me, the Flat Point Solid will deform less and penetrate slightly more at lower velocities, the Cup Point Solid will expand slightly more at higher velocities giving a little more wound diameter but sometimes a little less penetration. But that "less" is very relative since they both penetrate very well. I should stop there because there are many on the forum who have hands on experience on DG with these bullets and Mike would probably start pulling out his hair if he saw my understanding of their design differences and ballistics. I can say that they are darned accurate in all three of the calibers I have loaded for in my rifles (375 H&H, 404 Jeffery and 416 Rigby).

Here is photo of Cup Point unfired and fired into my test medium, four 5 gallon nylon buckets fiulled w water.

This correlates to shots into buffalo for weight retention and expansion by 90-95%.



As you can see, it expands a bit. THis is the 450 grain 458 at 2600 fps, and will look like your 300 grain as they have similar SD and velocity.

I prefer the CP to the Barnes X line as the expanded mushroom is better supported and less likely to blow off.



Here you see the effect of velocity on the Barnes X 400, 450 and 500 grain.

CPS = cup point solid. It expands just a bit and is the perfect cape buffalo bullet because it creates a wider wound channel than a FPS. Penetration is tops among expanding bullets.

FPS = flat point solid. It does not expand and gives maximum penetration. The ideal bullet for elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo that are heading straight away from you.

Has anyone ever inquired if NF would consider .510" diameter bullets for the .500 NE?

From what I hear, these (North Forks) are good solids for DR?
