I just completed fitting my NECG front sight with the white bead on my 416 Rem. Ruger No. 1. I also have the NECG Masterpiece adjustable rear sight. I really like the sight picture. I fired two sighters and these were the next three shots at 50 yards. Please excuse the .308 bullet holes.

I also attached a video of a shot off the sticks and offhand. They are the shot to the left and the high shot on the target in the picture.

And yes I am hunting Cape buffalo with the No. 1. I have been practicing speed shooting, positions, etc etc. I talked it over with my PH and outfitter. Both said no problem, actually the PH commented he liked single shots because hunters tend to make the shot count. As per their suggestion I will also be using a scope even though I love the irons.

I have been back and forth on using the sling. I definitely shoot better with the sling. The position is not the classic Big Bore stance neither, it is closer to what I use in a NRA Highpower match. I just do not find the recoil bad enough with the 416 to change.

As I move up in caliber I will probably shoot a different stance and I am also practicing without the sling.

Choices, choices, and more choices.

Mike, if you normally hunt with a sling on, theres no reason not to when in Africa . Only you might have QD swivels for when hunting in real thick cover.
Your rifle looks nicely light and handy which should be a joy to hunt with.

Mike,

Looks like you've got a good handle on the rifle. Are you shooting out of your garage? That's a pretty sweet setup if you can shoot right into your back yard!

Oh, and the #1 is a classic rifle that deserves to head to the dark continent. Good luck with it!

That is my shop in my backyard. I have only one neighbor and he hunts also. My berm is only about 4' tall but I shoot at 50 yards. I do not use it very often, I just did not have time to go to the range that day.

The No 1 almost looks like a toy in my hands, but I am 6'-3" tall.

I do have QD sling swivels and scope mounts.

Good on ya, most folks just accept the fact that they can't shoot iron sights without even giving them a chance...

Up to perhaps as much as 200 yards I would just as soon be shooting irons as a scope, in fact I prefer them..Beyond 200 yards I'll take a scope.

Ray,

Part of the problem is the poor sights on some factory rifles. Ruger should be ashamed of the No 1 sights. I wanted to buy the rear sight for the new Ruger 375 African and try to fit it to the No 1. but Ruger would not sell the sight. Go figure. I am happy with the NECG sights.

When I give rifles to my young nephews they do not have scopes only irons, I want them to learn how to shoot.

Brownells sells a Ruger front sight with a 3/32 ivory bead..

My favorite iron sights are:

NECG partridge gold faced post in combination with Talleys QD peep sight..

Wisners adjustable ( pre war M-70) island sight with shallow V with a 3/32 ivory bead.

I like the island two leaf NECG shallow V sights.

I also like quarter ribs, and a barrel band front sight and barrel band swivel is a near must with me...but the NECG adjustable sweat on or screw on front sight also suits me fine.

A good receiver sight works well also and I use them on some rifles such as my Sav. 99 and have used them on Pre 64 and 94 Winchesters with success..

Mike,

You are doing good work off hand and will be able to get a faster reload without the sticks.

I did not like having the sticks always forced on me by the PH or staff.

Practice your reload both ways, but dont be shy about pushing them out of the way for an off-hand shot.

The only time I want a stick is if a bear trys to eat me, then I can whip his a$$ and run him off...I sure don't want sticks to shoot off, in fact I am not allowed to use them in Pierre,s camp, I am required to shoot offhand or use a tree for rest..I can't shoot off sticks, don't ask me why, nobody knows why! I am a good off hand shot, always have been, guess thats because all cowboys on West Texas ranches thought that was the only way anyone shot a rifle, and it was back then.

At the Rambouillet Game Fair I picked up a rifle made by J.P. Ridon in 404 Jeffery, with the pyramid rear sight sold by Recknagel. I found it very fast on target. Do you see this sight in the US? I think it would be good on DG. I don't know if the link will work but here goes:

The open sights made by Rechnagel that NECG sells are great, but those you posted are the ugliest crap I have ever seen. I know they showed up on the Chapuis 9.3 I had.

Do you have to have a Blaser to use them? Do you have to live in a socialist country to use them or just belong to the European Union? Smiler Is there a difference?

I wonder if anyone has tried to replace the factory folding sight with one of the NECG sight blades in the original dovetail. Could it be filed to fit?

Thanks Will and Ray,

Here I thought I was just cranky olf fart.

Best way to cure staff from offering you shooting sticks is to blast off 100 grains of powder through a muzzle brake at 12 inches from ear hole!

Worked for me!

Dear Will, I don't know if there is a difference between the European Union and a Blaser. Nothin' comes up in Wikepedia on it. However, I understand that most countries are now socialist, unless compared with California. Does this help?

Good shooting Mike,

Not wanting to hi jack your tread but .... killpc

I would love to have the NECG front sights on my 500 Jeff.

But they will not ship to either Dubai or South Africa Mad Frowner

They are perfect for what I want from a front sight.

Any sugegstions on other sights?

I had a Heym straight pull in 35 Whelen that had factory Era sights for shooting running boar. The front was a red flourescent bead and the rear was an adjustable on an island base. The blade was pyramid shaped with a flat top and the blade had a greenish flourescent rod inserted vertically in the sight opening. This made a vertical straight line with a red dot on top for a sight picture. Absolutely the fastest acquisition sights I have ever used. I duplicated them on my 405 model 95 Kreiger conversion but could never find the rear blade the same and have never seen another one. The rifle was ordered custon from Heym at the factory by a US Colonel stationed at Ft. Huachuca when I bought it. Absolutely without a doubt the worst kicking gun I have ever had also the quickest to use.

I'm kinda sorta with Will on the looks of these things. The problem is they seem to work really well. Some men have a similar dilemma with women.
