I used to have the guns and ammo magazine with the article. Unfortunately it is gone now. Jack used a 338 to start with and there were some gas tube metering problems that needed attention. But he did get it running. sounds like a cool modification!

Hi fivebigbores,

In 'Walking Them Up' by Ken Pearce :1992 (this book has also recently been republished) on pg 123, author Ken Pearce mentions of three Browning BAR's that have been converted to .458WM.

"The Browning Bar has been successfully converted to .458 magnum and at the time of writing this piece, I know of three 'in service'- all made by Kerang gunsmith, Peter Davern."

If you contact the ADA (Australian Deer Association) I'm sure they would be able to help you . I can chase up their website if you like.

Cheers,

Adrian.

I might add just in case you have plans on hunting in Africa with it that simi autos and full autos are illegal in all African countries.

Didn't know that Peter was an accomplished gunsmith too, he made a couple of sets of custom dies for me back ion the late 80s. I haven't heard of him for years now so not sure if he still operates or is even still with us, I know he had had health problems back then. Perhaps one of our Australian compatriots can fill us in on this. Kerang is Northern Victoria from memory.

About a year or so back - there was a hunting show sponsored by Benelli and they were hunting plains game with semi auto rifles. May have been Zambia .
