While I killed the buffalo with the DGX, the 2 bullets we recovered didn't fare too well. The factory ammo out of my Ruger chrono'd at 2237 and shot well but I personally think that the jacket material is too brittle. The first bullet we recovered had started to mushroom and the mushroom sheared off of the bullet ahead of the ogive. Velocity on my handloads through the chrono were 2254 fps and very consistent. The second bullet had sheared off at the cannelure for most of the circumference of the bullet except for about 1/3 of the jacket material was still standing without any lead left. Have heard good reports from the PH's about the DGS but the ones I hunted with don't like the DGX very much. Just my .02
The bullet was destroyed but what penetration did it give and what damage was done to the animal before it came apart? A jacketed soft 130gr bullet from a 270win will go through a half inch piece of steel before it comes apart. If we did not want a bullet to expand much and do severe damage fast we would all be using solids alone. That is why I prefer a 550 soft for the Lott on buff as a first shot. |
