Phil, I love ya brother, but you sure can come untrained at times!!  Next time you get down to my wickeup bring your wife, kids,and rifle and 2.5 scope and a pocket full of quarters, we'll have a shoot off! I know the kids with their good eyes will beat us both, but we won't let them play!  Btw, in terms of confession I have a 2.5X Leupold Alaskan on my Ruger 338, its a backup for my irons! love that little scope. I also like the option to just point and shoot in the pucker bush on buff, LIon and Hippo, Not sure on Bear, never had one try to eat me. Im deadly point shooting at 25 yards, even comfortable at 50 yards, well sorta in that I can hit paper, maybe not big mean ugly animals. You can have it all! Express sights, peep sight, and scope on the same rifle. Decide which to use depending on game hunted and hunting environment/terrain. Express sights on rib, Talley QD grooves in rib for either Talley QD scope mounts or Talley peep sight. One areas they don't win and in fact way behind iron sights. Chasing roos and pigs and emus and shooting from back of WWII Jeep or one of those early 1970s Suzukis. One thing is just reloading the rifle while you bounce around. Lever gun is shit as harder to load when bouncing around. 303 SMLE is tops. CRF is also not reliable and because of reloads and aa lot of cases having burrs on the rims caused by shooting conditions. In general, to get the best out of iron sights requires lot of practice and where the rifle sort of "has a feel to it" and almost becomes and extension of the shooter. Scope is definitely king when spotlight shooting. | |||

Biggest "common issue" I had with CRF was when we had M17s rebarrel to 270 and some Euro ammo and brass, I think it was Hirtenberg or some similar name. With some the rim was a big bit in diameter and others sometimes had an extractor groove that was a bit shallow. Fucked M17 but no issues with Sakos. Of course if you go to Africa or shooting in America with very low volume shooting them you can check each round. I reckon CRF is the nicest action to watch working and no doubt if I was getting a top end in 300 H&H or 375 H&H I would have CRF as just seems right,  But CRF demands quality ammo in both rim and groove dimensions and no burrs of case rims. | |||

Phil, I think it would be more fun to film you shooting birds with Old Ugly and Ray with his choice of big bore irons. Might have to get some pen raised pheasants to make it legal but...sure would be great video to settle the discussion! A big ole pheasant with big bore is a walk in the park, only head shots count..I'll use irons and PHil can shoot a scope.. Rip, Your right most of my big bores carried a 2.5 Leupold compact in Talley QD rings and bases with a Talley peep in case my peep sight got lost..... PHil, I have my Browning superposed oil and ready, but birds in So. Idaho are slim pickens the last few years, but might get into some chuckers depending on the snow level in the So. Hills..but hey we'll give it our best shot. I'll put more water in the beans and the coffee is always on, and we'll find everyone a place to lay down...
