I recently bought a Heym 89B in .450 NE and am in the process of pondering reloading data for it. Has anyone here tried 480 and 500 grain bullets in their .450's? I know most .450's are usually pretty forgiving insofar as using 480's and 500's in them and I have a stock of both on hand. A friend has an earlier 88B in .450 NE and he prefers 500 North Fork softs and Dzombo solids in his rifle, and they regulate perfectly at 2 200 fps. Any specific data with regard to propellants would be welcome. I have access to a reasonably wide range, including Somchem, IMR, Hodgdon and Norma.

Would love to see pics of you have them and would be willing to share. If you need help hosting them send me a PM and I can host them. Your rifle is exactly the modern double I would buy.

They work with 480 and 500s; when you get to that weight it doesn't make any difference. It's the powder that matters as much; just because you get to the regulation velocity, that doesn't mean it will regulate due to different powders causing different muzzle flip and jump. My Searcy uses 96 grains of IMR 4831, only. Regulated for that load and provide by the maker. It will shoot into one inch with it. I tried some 4350 for the same velocity; kicked much less, but also crossed badly. Point is, no one can give you a load because loading for DRs is not a science; it is an art, sometimes a black one. This thread should in Double Rifles.

Thanks al lot, Adam. This is the type of info I was looking for. I just want to get a starting point and will work along from there. I have regulated quite a few doubles but this will be the first newly-made rifle for me.

For the .450 x 3.25" NE, I got the impression that Graeme Wright liked either 92 grains of H4350 or 95 grains of IMR-4831, both giving 2125 fps with 480-grainer in 26" barrels. His rifle was on regulation at that MV with 480-grainers. Recoil will be greater with IMR-4831, so, as dcpd said, one or the other will be better depending on the rifle's regulation. I also got the impression that the slower burning H4831SC was too slow in MV and too heavy in charge/recoil to get to regulation loads in most DR's of proper regulation. 102 grains of it gave only 2085 fps. I would consider it utterly obscene to use anything but the 480-grainers in a .450 x 3.25" NE. BTW, same loads will give very close to same results in the .450 Dakota bolt action, except you do not have to worry about regulation, just one-hole groups. Rip ...

Started off using RL15 but at the time wanted to get away from using a filler, went to H4831 also shot well but the recoil was heavier have settle on H4350. Used Wright's book for all of my load development Shooting 480gr CEB Solids and 450gr CEB Raptors very happy with their perfomance on Big Game.

BTW, I hope you have a good stock of those CEB bullets. They only offer 500gr solids and 470 gr Raptors now. Anyone have load data for RL15 for the 450 NE? I seem to have a lifetime supply of it.

In Graeme Wright's Book Shooting the British Double in the 2nd edition he shows RL15 loads of 84gr using a filler he recommends foam..But in his 3rd edition he no longer shows RL15 but has gone to RL19 97-100grs siting that you no longer need a filler Hope this helps
