Guys, Anyone tried lighter bullets (400, 425, 450 gr) in the .458 AR? Would sure appreciate an estimate of starting charge for H335 with 425 gr Rhino jacketed bullets on the .458 AR cartridge. Case volume is approximately 112.1 gr of H2O. Bullet length is 1.295" for the 425 gr Rhino. When loaded to the same length as a 500 gr Woodleigh, the bullet would be 0.490" into the case. Case drawings can be located at: Thread with AR Cartridge case dwgs What other info might be needed for a computer program estimate of starting charge and range? Mike, what kind of speed are you looking for? With the 458AR only being about 4% greater than the Lott in case capasity, I would start with a slightly reduced Lott load and work my way up. Of cousre the AR being bottled necked, it will be slightly more efficant than the Lott. Keith, I expect that the cartridge will push the 425 to faster than I need for North American hunting. I thought 2400 would be just fine for anything here. I'll be happy to use 500 gr Woodleighs in Africa, but would like to have the option of the 425 Rhino or the 450 gr TSX as well. I've had very good success with the 350 gr Barnes X in .416 Rigby on Gemsbock, Hartebeast, Cape Buffalo and Bison. The 350 gr X bullet holds up well @ 2700 fps plus from the 458 Lot... It should do well in the 458 AR at a simular or increased velocity..That or the 400 gr CS HV .bullet should work well ... I was useing 82 gr Imr 4198 with moly coated X bullets.... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined .... | |||
