A custom matched set of bolt rifles chambered in .375 H&H and .458 Lott would be beautiful. I voted .470 Nitro Double because I think it adds overall versatility to the African battery.

Agree with Buliwyf.
470 NE double for the 1% of hunting not covered by the .375 through .510 caliber bolt actions.
470 NE or 500 NE double, no others need apply. thumb

Of the choices offered, I voted go huntiing. However, I would want a DR in 450-400J, just to fit something in the middle of the two bolt guns.

I have a Lott and will have a matching 375H&H.(but scoped)

If there is ever a choice between (a) buy a new rifle, or (b) go hunting in Africa, I will always choose (b).

Ya know, Vapodog, I too think 500 grains does have something there.
But...I'm building a .395 Ruger Max and have several others I'm thinking about.

50 cal. and larger. As for choice #5, when it comes to rifles, "need" has nothing to do with it.

None of'em...(except the "go hunting" part)

I'd go with a .577 or a .600NE...Why?...Because I just gotta see what one of these "overkill" bad-boys really does when it whacks an Ele / Buff!

You have all you need to go hunting!!! thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I agree with Bitteroot, Need ain't got nothing to do with it. That is down right blasfamous!! How can so many vote for it, I am dissappointed in all of you. shame, shame , shame! I would get a double in a largere 500 caliber, probably a 577 nitro.

11.2x72 Schuler and 470 Capstick for me. The Schuler fits nicely between the Queen and the Lott while the Capstick would provide peace of mind.

If you are going to buy a double get a 450/400. If you are going to buy a bolt action get a 404 Jeffery.

I would buy a moderately priced .470 double, like a Chapuis, and then go hunting!
