Well all, today I shot the first 5 rounds through my .458 Win.Mag. I don't know if any of you ever saw any of the stuff I wrote about it before. It is a 1917 Winchester that I got, has a straight bolt handle, duck pond filled right, Apex barrel 22" long, Gold bead front site on a ramp, Winchester adjustable style safari site in back. Basic walnut stock, front band sling swivel blah blah blah. Anyways, shot 5 times, just at a big rock about 110yards off up in the mountains (don't worry, it was backdropped by a whole mountain). Rifle shot great, aside form the bold binding, which I knew about before shooting it, and the last round from the magazine binds, needs some work on the feed ramp. But the big problem was that the stock is too high in the comb and it felt like I got punched in the face, I had to get my cheekbone down on the comb to see the sites right. But it did shoot great! so now to a gunsmith to have the bold raceways polished out and the feeding problem corrected, and to a stockmaker to have the comb reshaped. Few other things, but on my way to a good service rifle. Red PS They were just Winchester 510g loads out of the box. | ||

I considered it, but then would need new dies, new brass etc. etc. Figure keep this one like it is. When the big bore bug hits me again I will get something else, already considering a 416 taylor or 404 Jeffery. I could always have them change my 45/70 to 458 lott if I got the notion. :-) Now looking at getting a new stock for this one. looks like I don't have enough wood to get the comb down low enough for me.
