577 T-Rex & 1184gr cast bullet question...(with Pic) Login/Join

I am currently casting some 1184gr .587" bullets for the T-Rex. My question relates to which lube to use. I loaded up some with Lee Alox (in the tube, tan in color, solid at room temp) but it is definately a sticky lube to use.
Since the 1184gr bullet sits with 2.5 lube grooves below the neck and into the case, I'm thinking that the surface of my bullet INSIDE the case looks like a doughnut with sprinkles of gunpowder on it. What do I do?

1) Ignore it and work up loads with the sprinkle lube bullet.
2) Use different lube, a HARD lube.
3) Filler to keep powder away from bullet base/side (I don't like this idea)
4) Other?

 -

I am using XMP5744 due to the large case size and low % of powder to space. I'm starting at 65gr and working up from there.

The other bullet is a 727gr solid brass projectile turned on a CNC machine. The fired bullet hit a sand birm and made a major 'wound channel'. Small upon entrance, but after 4-5" I thought it interscected with a woodchuck hole as far back as my elbow (I'm 6'2").

(ps. I'm also posting this on the Cast Bullet room as this is a Big Bore/Cast bullet crossover question)

I do not know the answer to your question, but what velocities do you expect to get from the T-Rex.

Also BMG was the T-Rex modelled of another case, like the Nyati was ??.

If the Nyati can hit 1950 I would expect you to be able to get 2200-2300 fps, and I imagine the energy to be around 13000 foot pounds.

If you used 150 gr powder in a 13.5 pound rifle you would have 237 foot pounds of recoil at 33 fps [Eek!]

Is your BMG breaked, what type of rifle do you have, barrel length etc, have you tried it on small thin skinned game yet [Big Grin] ???

I have not been that keen to shoot over the 650's yet in my .585, but I will get up there slowly I have a pack of woodeligh 750's for my own personal christinening [Wink]

BMG-Try SPG lube applied using your fingers to fill the lube grooves or better yet stand the bullets up in a shallow tray and melt the SPG lube( using hot water under the tray) untill all the lube grooves are filled. The bullets should be .001 over bore diameter and if you make a .621 tubing cookie cutter for the bullets they will come out just fine. I've had no trouble with shooting big bores with hard cast bullets ( Linotype) up to 2000fps using this approach.-Rob.

My first answer is get another mold, but I'm sure that one was expensive. Most of the time you are just not going to get good performance with a bullet base that far into the case with CB's. The dacron filler is an option but I don't think it will work.

I would try lubing the top 2 grooves only, leaving the lower grooves empty and see how much leading you get.
What are the properties of your casting alloy?

This is the same bullet that Roy Vincent used in his Nyati data on the reloading pages. His weight was 1200gr and my WW + Tin (95/5 soder) weighes 1184gr which isn't too far off (he could also have rounded up to an even #). I'll try some of the SPG lube to see if that helps.

My rifle is a .577 T-Rex made by A-Square with the Hannibal action. It has NO MB on it. I have been shooting 650gr Woodleighs @ 2550fps and 727gr solids @ 2440fps which opens a MEGA can of whoop-ass on my shoulder. I haven't come away from any of my 'Recoil Awareness' scessions without at least a mild headache, sore shoulder, and a rainbow of colors that develop on my shoulder in a day or two (the green & yellow is my favorite). I killed my Chronograph with SG Sabots and haven't replaced it yet but will try and get velocities from a friends Crony.

I think I'm going to pack the case with 150gr or so of IMR5010 (a .50BMG PD powder) as I have an ample *chuckle* supply of it. I'm guessing that it will leave a lot of unburned kernels, but such is life. I'll also try 140gr of H4831, 130gr Rel25, and 150gr of WC872.

***If anyone has Quickload and wants to send me the powder/velocity/PSI printout for the T-Rex and the 1184gr bullet with the 50+ powders available, PLEEEEASE (Insert begging sound)be my guest. I'm looking to 'Max Out' at 1500-1600fps with any given powder. The above load info is a SWAG/guestimate on my part.***

BMG, In relation to the 650 woodleigh's in my .585 I am using the 650 Black powder Woodleigh's which have a slightly reduced impact velocity over there harder varients. They work ver well on thin skinned game.
