Books about ten to 15 years old by Capstick say that the only 40 cal. that ammunition is readily available for is the 404 Rimless Nitro Express. Capstick poo pooed the 416's as exotic, expensive, and hard to buy ammo for. Things have changed. The 416 Rigby appears to have overtaken the 404 in popularity as far as new gun manufacture, and other than KYNAMCO, I don't know where I'd find 404 ammo. Are there other suppliers who make fairly inexpensive factory 404 ammunition currently? H. C.

Henry, I don't think .404 Jeff ammo and "fairly inexpensive fatory" go in the same sentence; somewhat of an oxymoron today. Westley Richards will sell you 10 rounds for $65 for example. Norma makes and sells brass, and Ray has posted his good handloads. jim dodd

Try Superior Ammo. There stuff is not cheap, but everything of theirs I have shot has been good. The only way to get "cheap" ammo is to reload it your self. I think at one time either Norma or RWS loaded 404 ammo.

Big bores are not inexpensive to shoot, you must handload or have a friend handload for you...The Federal 416 Rigbys are bloody expensive as are the 470's...goes with the bigger calibers. RWS, Norma, Kynoch and others have loaded 404 in the past...others apparantly load it now as stated in the above posts. I roll my own.

Doesn't RWS still load it? I have a couple of boxes around. It is marked 10.75x73 (metric name)
