I have found a cheap Bruno 601 for sale is this the same size action as a 602 as in can it be made into a 375H&H?

No they are not the 602 is 375 H&H , the outher I belive is 30-06.

Wouldnt it just be cheaper to start with a 602? How much would you like to spend ... there is a mint 602 in 375H&H with VXII 2-7x for $1600 here. And ... I missed a 375H&H 602 for $600 not long ago

The 601 is the short action and was chambered for .222, .223, .243 and .308. The 600 was for .30/06 length cartridges and, as you know, the 602 was the magnum action.

There is no way you can chamber a 601 for .375H&H. In fact, the largest caliber/cartridge that you can put in the 601, without some major (and expensive) changes, would be the .358 Win.

Yes, the numbers do not make much sense except that the .30/06 length (600) was the first action offered for sale, then they introduced the short action and, lastly, the magnum.

If you are not interested in the 601 I would be. Can you tell me what calibre and stock design it is? A year of manufacture and the asking price? (The two-digit year of manufacture is on the left hand side of the receiver ring and on the left hand side of the barrel near the chamber swell if the barrel is original.)

Yes it would be cheaperbut to find one at a good price. Would like to spend 800-900 at most.

Model number is in error it was a 600; as I said the 601 was the short action.

I did, in fact, see this rifle a couple of weeks ago and there is a good reason it was cheap - some idiot had ground an extra set of dovetails on the receiver ring below the existing dovetail and it was uneven and bloody rough (and why would you want another dovetail below the existing one????). I think that it must have been done by hand with a Dremel tool, or something similar.

Not only was the extra dovetail ugly, uneven and poorly done, but it was quite deep and, I suspect, has seriously compromised the strength of the receiver ring. In any event, the rifle was ruined and nothing more than junk, IMO.

Bwanabob, Thad Scott has several 601s for sale on www.gunsamerica.com, one for $435US.

Good that it went then. As I'm in Vic didn't have a chance to actually see it. They really should have mentioned on the web site re the damage.
