Hello

I just picked up a Win 70 classic safari express 375 H&H that's like new except the previous owner had the barrel cutdown and installed a brake. The total barrel length is 22 inches at present.

My intentions upon buying the rifle was to have it rebarreled to 25 or 26 inch. I have a Badger blank that has the factory express contour. I don't have much into the rifle yet and I'm having second thoughts. Should I go ahead and rebarrel it to 25 inch or just keep it at 22 with the brake and save myself 500 bucks.

If you hunt wearing hearing protection there's no reason not to try it as it. You can always rebarrel later if you want. If you hunt with naked ears then ditch the brake and install the longer tube. $0.02

I knew somebody would cut to the chase on this one. No I don't use hearing protection usually except at the range.

would like some more opinions.

I'd get rid of that brake and keep it at whatever is left of the barrel length and shoot it to see how you like it. My opinion $500 bucks for 3 or 4 more inches of barrel and maybe 60 to 90 more feet per second hardly equates.
Bob that damn brake off of there and start shooting!

Have a cap made and have the best of both modes. Shouldn't be very expensive to make a knurled cap, don't even have to blue. My 375 and 416 both have 21" barrels.

I would shoot it with and without the brake, over a chrono, and see what you think. In addition, see how it groups for you.

Once you see what you really have it may be easier to decide. I'd hate to throw away an unusually fast or accurate barrel to hope for a few more inches of barrel length.

I have a 375 H&H with a short barrel--19" + brake. I am thinking of rebarreling to 24 + brake. I want the brake to be removable, and I am tired of being 100-150 fps short of the book.

Your mileage will vary,

Cheers,

Dan

.....That makes 3 for shoot and have a cap made for hunting ...All this talk about people who can,t shoot the big bores they bring on expensive hunts , is because they don,t shoot their big bores ALOT long before they go on the hunt ......If you shoot the 20 or so rounds a week you should with a 375 , after a while you will probably stop ... where as if you shoot 20 rounds of 375 ,that feels like an 06 a week you are just going to keep getting better and better .....and when you are a really good and smooth off hand it makes all the difference in the world ...Keep the break ,,and shoot the barrel out then rebarrel ...should take a few thousand rounds ......Just my Humble Opinionated Opinion .........

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Oh, c'mon - a .375 H&H is plenty of gun for killing books... Big Grin

All kidding aside, either I have the slowest bunch of guns in creation, or else most of 'the books' are mighty optimistic in their numbers.

I suspect the guys who write the books either have reeeaaalllyy long barrels, or reeaallyy sharp pencils...or a bit of both. I can load stuff up until I give the brass a hernia, and even out of 24" barrels I'm usually 100 to 150 fps short of 'the book'. Nosler, especially, seem to be the biggest B.S.ers of the bunch.

I stopped caring about the numbers, as long as the moose keep falling over the way I want them to. Now I just pay attention to getting the bullets exactly where I want them, and to hell with 'the book'. Wink

Ok I have allready got the badger barrel, so I'm going to try it as is for a while if I likes it I'll keep it as is. If I don't I have the new barrel.

I know brakes are loud but the 30'06 recoil is a big draw. Thanks for the input.
