Beartooth bullets make some nice GC lead bullets. I like them in my 416 B&M for playing around.I want to start using them in my 458 SS. The question is-they make them in .457, .458, .459-

I don't have much experience with lead bullets--which diameter would y'all recommend

Thanks

I'd go with the .459s and don't push them too fast.

Or push them real fast(2700 +) and they won't lead the bore.
Work for any hard alloy, harder than BHN20.Ed

Don't worry about fast--most of them will be Trailboss loads---fun for turkeys and turtles on a Sunday afternoon. I like to shoot and the gclead bullets and trail boss make shooting big bores almost as cheap as rim fires--and easier to get right now.

Thanks Ed

i don't know what alloy Beartooth is casting--am sure its in their web site info somewhere but i haven't been able to find it.
Like I said above--these are for sunday afternoon plinking loads--the occasional pig perhaps but mostly just playing, so am not too stressed over them--as long as they are accurate-hence the question on diameter

I would just shoot some Rem. 405gr SP, for a cheap bullet, with no problems.

Keith-

at @50 cents apiece the beartooth bullets(50 for 21.00 plus shipping) are a decent deal, and i like the bullet profile. Using Trailboss loads i am not putting any stress on them. Like I said these are just for fun plinking loads--not that they wouldn't kill a hog if i run into one---probably be in the area of a hot 45 Colt load-

Sean,

I'll be getting my 416 B&M in a couple of weeks. What load are you using with those bullets? And what is your source for the bullets?

Thanks in advance.

tanks

the bullets i am using are from-
http://www.beartoothbullets.com

have loved them in 416, am using then335 gr.

loading with Trailboss is a little different--you load by volume, not weight--go to Hogdens website and it walks you through it-

not fast loads but inexpensive and lots of fun--and you get good practice on your big bore rifles.

If you have any more questions about this please get back to me-----its a fun way to use your big bore--

I love my 416 B&M -elephant and buffalo went down easy--It is truly the modern equivalent of the 416 Rigby and 404 Jeffery.

michael has truly changed the total equation with his development of these cartridges and the bullets that go with them.

Hope you have the same results with your 416 that I have had.

Best of luck

Sean

PS I know Michael is in love with his 458s--but I truly believe that the 416 B&M is a anything -anywhere cartridge.

Well, actually I am picking up both the 500MDM, and the 416B&M in a couple of weeks. I am looking at the 416 as the all-around rifle (Elk in the fall with 235gr CEB raptor), and backup to 500MDM for DG.

Those bullets are indeed inexpensive. Unfortunately I don't have any Trail Boss, so will have to wait until I can source some.

Sean.....

Many years ago I got some of the Beartooths in .416, I think those were 375 gr bullets, and still have a lot of them left, I think? Will have to remember to look when I get home this week......

Back then, I played with them in 416 Remington, 416 B&M had not come about yet. Checking my data I see that in 12/2004 I used 45/IMR 4198 for an excellent load at 1832 fps in 24 inches of 416 Rem. In 2/2005 in another rifle, the same load for 1833 fps, and in 2/2006 same load, same rifle, 1867 fps, all excellent accuracy at 50 yards...... Ironically 1/2004 I used same bullet, same load, in 416 Taylor with a 22 inch barrel I was playing with for 1857 fps.....

Looking through all the 416 B&M data I did in fact try a load with the 375 gr bullet and 42/IMR 4198 for 1704 fps, my notes say it was excellent at 50 yards with 5 rounds.......... This was 1/30/2009........ I also own a 24 inch 1885 Winchester in 416 B&M, I see on 1/29/2009 I tried this same load in that 24 inch gun and hit 1821 fps......

For reduced loads in the big bores many many years ago I started using IMR 4198, never used a filler in my life for this and in all cases had really good results with it.

So Tanks, I am quite sure we can play around with some loads with IMR 4198 and get some good results with these bullets. Just pick a velocity you want, and I bet we can hit it pretty close and get good results..........But you MUST remind me.......... I have a 416 set up for pressures too, and we can even do that.........

I find also I have used the IMR 4198 for reduced loads with other bullets, 400 Barnes Solid with 45/IMR 4198 1753 fps. Doing some of the low velocity shear points, again I fell back on IMR 4198 with the 370 Raptors 45/IMR 4198 1871 fps and 47/IMR 4198 at 1944 fps.......

HEH HEH.... Yeah, maybe true, but rest assured I have a passion for nearly all the B&Ms, and that includes the 416 as well...... The only one I don't like is the 475 B&M, but all the rest, I really may never be able to make my mind up which one I like the BEST. I have this little tiny 18 inch Ultimate 416 that handles so damn good, so easy to work with, light to carry, I really love that one. But then there is that wonderful 18 inch 458 B&M with the bastogne stock I used, last year.... Oh, and that Myrtle 19 inch 500 MDM........ But wait, there is that 19 inch stainless 500 MDM that saved my life in 2011..... Can't forget "THE B&M RIFLE" that incredible Bastogne stocked 50 B&M..... Wait, don't leave out the Snow Camo 458 B&M Alaska rifle 18 inch stainless...... Oh and the list goes on, I will never be able to pick a favorite I am afraid.......LOL............

I use .459 as the diameter of my cast loads in the .458 Win Mag. 425 grain GC bullet, not much more than 12 -14 BHN. I load 51 grains of AA 2015 with Dacron filler. Works wonderfully. It is my favorite "doe" gun. Don't know how fast it goes at the muzzle but it exits the very dead deer just about as fast.. Fun and easy to shoot.
