Has anyone had any experience with these actions? http://www.surgeonrifles.com/

They talk a great game.

It is my considered opinion that:
1. anyone that uses the word "tactical" in a description of their product is trying to rip the public off.
in ad-speak it increases the pricing structure by 75-200% for nothing. It is also an excuse to squirt
a high-tech version of spray on truck bedliner for a finish inlieu of polishing and blueing the firearm.
2. substitute the phrase "butt-ugly" for tactical and see what you get.

The shooting world has gone stupid over the word tactical; like we all are sitting around dunking our prized hunting rifles in salt water or batter acid solutions in-between safaris. They are all children, needing constant stimulation and "new and shiney" toys to divert their attention from the fact that they are quite ordinary and not great thinkers and movers and shakers. Rather like a group of highschool cheerleaders, totally self-immersed and absorbed and narcissic.

I like the "a solid billet of Aircraft grade 4340 this is NOT a casting."
How do they think these pieces are made?
Is solid billet AL mined somewhere in South America?

Just kinda looks like a another 700 clone to me.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

These are one of the best action out there! One of his solid bottom recivers just set a record at F-class.

Read this: http://longrangehunting.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat...452&page=0&fpart=all

He has a post on that page.

Much much MUCH better then the ordinary remington action.

Also read here: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek046.html

And I dont see the problem of marketing them as Tactical actions. If he sells more action because of it, good for him. Its better that somebody builds something than the ordinary remington action!! Should he maybe market them as hunting rifles before its accepted by some of you?

I tend to agree that "Tactical" is a synonym for "fantasy-inspired rip-off".

They may be a great target action. I don't know and don't care. When I see the word "tactical" as part of a rifle ad, I move on.

He can call them whatever he wants, that's his perogative. In my eyes, it just plays into the hands of the anti-gun crowd, who love to paint the great unwashed as a bunch of incipient loonies who dream of shooting at people. So, of course, if he is going to sell actions which are great target actions, I would feel better if he called them that...."Target" rather than "Tactical".

I find it a lot easier to explain to newbies, non-shooters, and/or their spouses, all of whom can vote, how much self-discipline, skill, precision equipment, etc., is required to be a top-notch target shooter, and therefore why it is actually good to have people doing target shooting as a mode of self improvement, than to explain why the gun field is awash with rifles apparently intended for government employees killing people from concealment.

Very few advantages over the 700 action. If it were me, I would save the money, buy a 700P, and use the rest to take my wife out for dinner to kiss up for the new rifle.

Hello,
From the photo it is clear that the owner of this rifle is not a prone shooter in the classic sense i.e., prone with sling, shooting mat, spotting scope, etc. Scope eyepiece is entirely to far back than practical. Recoil would definitely wake up the shooter!! Eye piece normally is pretty much even w/ bolt shroud for prone shooting if not a bit forward.
This arrangement will work w/F Class shooting which is properly known as SF or supported fire. Problem w/ variable is loss of forward adjustment/movement of scope tube in rings due to power ring. Leupold M1 Mk4 16x (fixed power) much preferred or one of the fine U.S. Optics set ups.
Tend to agree with Big Bore Boar Shooter that the Rem. 700 action will work quite well and save a pile of money. There is a lot of hype about tactical rifles within civilian shooters and does bring about some unwanted press at times. Well, if the press does not like it or the anti gunners, they will just have to put up with it. Most of that crowd has learned that it is a new day in the U.S. and we are beginning to hold onto our rights whether arms or otherwise. Probably best entry rifle into the shooting sports for long range precision shooting is the Remington PSS in either 308, 300 Win Mag. (tough on barrels) or the lowly, but deadly 223. Enjoy whatever you decide on and there is a whole world out there involving precision shooting.

Just to mention, "billet" is considerably different that "casting" in the real world. Billet implies that it has been forged in some process (hammer, rolling, extruding, etc.) in order to improve material properties and grain structure.

I can get my metallurgist in if someone wants to argue about grain flow and all that technical crap but this is just the view of a non-specialist, although we do buy a lot of this material for our offshore engineering.
