My CZ550 in 458 Lott is a dream to shoot now at 11 pounds, with scope. I used a weaver rail base and Nikon Omega black powder scope with 5 inch eye relief (1.65-5x). The scope is a full 2 inches forward in position relative to the mounting with CZ rings without a base. The only down side is the scope is 1/2 higher than normal. I was looking at these leather cheek pads, more attractive than the strap on cloth, not exactly beauty either: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas...box.jsp.form1&Go.x=0 The come in three sizes, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. I guess I am leaning to the 3/4 size. Suggestions, please? These look good, but I think I have seen pics of some other leather products a little trimmer design. At $30 each, I can splurge. Any suggestion, size, source- would be much appreciated. I am pleased with the overall results. And, now, begun working a similar plan to get my 505 up to 12 pounds dry weight, with scope and a small weight in the butt.

Something like this looks better .45: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewp...productnumber=467776 And for the 505? http://www.midwayusa.com/viewp...productnumber=473003 I cannot think of a more fitting use for those junk ASquare over size loads. And little more weight to dampen the recoil. Might be a tight fit for that round.

I know you've already bought rings/mounts etc. but I use the Talley QR lever rings made for the CZ 550 American Safari on my 500 Jeffery with a 1.5 - 5x Leupold scope and it seems like the perfect height for me. Just a thought. Chuck Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

That is definately the class act, good choice IMHO. I have three lesser guns (375,416) setup similar now. The 458 has a bent barrel? And I needed a special (adjustable)ring to get the scope, any scope, on target. Thats done, and the result is a scope higher than normal. Not higher than some of these 6-18x mega scopes, but higher than a trim 1-4x with medium rings. The 505 kicks hard. It would have been nice if it was built to the advertized weight. I fixed that already. So; you used a 1.5-5 leupold with 500J. Interesting. I have a spare set of Tally rings. The omega scope has 5 inch eye relief. Its very comforting to have the scope out that far, but the Tally will not allow it. The VX III at the 1.5x setting has 4.4 eye relief. Excellent. The M70 with leupold base allows the scope about an inch forward. The Ruger and CZ you have no adjustment it right there in your face. Works ok on my 416. Dont know about a 50? I did not buy a scope yet for the 50. With the 458 I had to use a medium ring on the waever base, thats 1/2 inch higher scope mounting. With the 505, I have more choice of rings and I can use a low Leupold ring on the weaver base. Higher than a Talley but less then my 458. For that I gain 2 inch forward mounting of the scope. I will think about it. Either Tally QR or Weaver bases can be removed and swapped back and forth.

fourbore Stick a Limbsaver on it, takes a lot of the Sting out of the big guns.

I do plan to try that. I got one. It is not my plan for a perminant solution, another shooting aid in my arsenal - so to speak. I also got a PAST. That works well. I know everybody is different and all, so just for myself and based on recent experience I am forming the conclusion that my ideal gun weights field or range ready are: 375 9 lbs 416 10 lbs 458 11 lbs 505 12 lbs Given the above, I should be able to shoot the gun anytime any where, no pads or additional attachments needed. The scope is one way to get there. A leather cheek piece with 5 rounds, might just be another? Last thing I want to do is kill the resale with changes. I like the add-ons. Getting a gun to shoot straight with a bent barrel was the first problem. I needed the special rings on waever base and now a higher comb would be helpful for that gun. Otherwise the 458 is very shootable now, at 11 pounds. Even with the high scope it pretty good.

fourbore, I had CZ put two mercury recoil reducers in mine. My rifle weighs right around 12.25 with scope, rings and sling. Seems about right for a recoil shy guy like me ... I've no problem with the eye relief on the scope. I need a 14.5" LOP and have that so the scope hasn't come close to "kissing me" yet. Chuck, 500N With a limbsaver I get the extra LOP (now 13.75 I think), then I can use Leupold on std rings. Gain the desired 1 pound. I might try that on the 505. And raise the comb with leather gimmick on the 458Lott. Thank you for the advise, I will consider it. edit: I meant to add, any opinions on those Galco cheek rests? Bad taste or good looks?

If you want to raise the comb, you can easily do that with a Beartooth Comb Raising Kit or their is a device that has 2 heights but will send you link by PM when I find it.

That's what I did too fourbore, I put a limbsaver slip on recoil pad over my normal one. It gave me the extra 1" of LOP I needed and softens the blow ... Wish you the best, and thanks for all the advice you've given this new to the game big bore shooter ..
