A question for the forum. I bought a large quantity of 300gr and 270 gr 375 Fails Safe bullets primarily for practice. They group lights out in my rifle and was wondering if anyone has used them on Cape Buffalo. They have a mixed reputation on NA game.
thx
chris

Chris,

The Failsafes are custom made for buffalo and big stuff. If they shoot well in your rifle do not blow them of on practice. Ackley Improved User just returned from a safari where he smoked everything including a buffalo with Failsafes. Send him a PM.

FWIW I really liked the failsafes as well. I didn't have enough left to take to africa but used them for several years moose hunting and took three or four bulls with them. Performance was excellent penetration of 4+ feet in a couple of them. If I could of found enough of them they would of been my goto for buffalo as well. I realize a moose isn't a buff, but they make a pretty good bullet testing simulation IMHO Wink

Given the price of Failsafe's in Europe, you're making those of us who use tarnished Sierra's for practice really jealous.

Results I have seen show them to be the deepest penetrating "production" expanding bullet ever produced. The newer NF cup point may be its equal or better.
I would not waste them on practice either.

Both the 270 and 300 have been proven a few times over on the big thick stuff. IMO, the FS was the best bullet made for everything from elk on up. It got a bit of a tarnished rep when shooters were using them on white tails and other smaller animals. They were designed and meant specifically for big, tough, heavy critters. I have never recovered one, even after breaking BOTH shoulders on an elk it exited.

I have been very impressed with the 300grn bullets clients have used. I have not seen any of the 270's in use

cnm123,

Please do not use those for practice. I have been doling out my shrinking supply to needy hunters, and am down to the point of not being apply to sell any more.

Next to the various North Fork designs, the Failsafe (as noted above) was the best large game bullet ever made.

Many people will gladly trade you 2:1 for your Failsafes with other very nice bullets for plinking/practice. Please take care of the fraternity.

A simple note in Classifieds will have any of your excess redistributed at a profit to you in just a few days.

Thanks,

LD

I used 300 grain Failsafes on my first Safari in Zim in 2002. I hit my buffalo on the shoulder with one at about 60 yards and it went all the way through dropping him on the spot. I followed up with four more shots. He never got up. I was dissapointed when Winchester decided to discontinue production. Good luck in Zim next year and you can have full confidence in the Fail Safes.

Winchester DOES have the XP3 out now, but I know they're not available as components and I don't think they've made them bigger then 338 yet. Supposed to be the FS improved, but without the steel cup. Even if its just as good as the FS, don't think I've ever heard of a buff hunter using a plastic tip lol

Really??

I tried to move 3 boxes of 300's a couple times over the last year or so with no interest shown.

I took some Winchester Failsafes 375 H&H 300 grainers once to Tanzania and was remarkably unimpressed with their performance on Buffalo.

Barnes X bullets did a much better job and penetrated deeper with more damage.

However that was my humble experience. I would not use them again.

Is there a bad 375 bullet today..If so I have not seen it..I do remember when bullet failure was an issue..Kudos to the bullet makers of this era.

The monolithics are great on buffalo, all of them seem to work. My favorites are GS Customs hollow points and flat nose solids, and Northfork cup points. I also really like Woodleighs, never had one fail.

I used them on my first Africa trip. The biggest thing I shot was eland and a couple of Zebra. Never did recover one. They are maybe the best heavy game bullet ever made.
