WOUND CHANNEL OR HEART SHOTS ON CAPE BUFFALO PICTURES? Login/Join

Hi
I'm wondering if anyone has internal shots of cape buffalo, after they have been hit with different calibers, at different velocities?

What I'm trying to do is to be able to have pictures that show the increase in wound channel, as velocity, or caliber, or bullet type is changed.

It's often argued that a 45-70 is capable of hitting a cape buffalo in the heart, and killing it. My bit of research has shown that they maybe the case, but, it may take a LONG time for that bullet to take effect, if the velocity is low, since the bullet punches a clean hole, that is not fatal promptly.

I'd like to see pictures of cape buffalo hearts, or organs, hit with REAL dangerous game calibers.
Below is the heart of a cape buffalo who went for 20 minutes after being heart shot with a Garett Hammerhead, at 1650 fps.

Next is a Buffalobore 430 Grn LFN at 1925 fps

Died in minutes.

Finally, an Asian buffalo with 440 grain bullets, 500JRH at 1100 fps meat damage

Comments??

Alf:
I just found the heart to be a consistently sized organ in cape buffalo, that's often used for a target. I was intrested in one, commonly hit organ, that could be used to evaluate the wound channel produced by different calibers, and bullets, at different velocities.

The argument is often used that 45-70 or such is inadequate for buffalo. It would be nice to be able to quantify the difference in wound channel in a common organ, as has been done above.

Thanks

I suppose a 270 could put a hole through a buff heart too?

Where is that dead horse Icon when I really need it???

Sure, provided it could get there. But, that's EXACTLY the point.

That would give a better wound channel analyisis then shooting phone books, etc.

The point of this is to show WHY certain calibers aren't cape buffalo rounds, and some are...

Is thise a reload or was it shot from a long barreled revolver or a rifle?
The factory load 440 grain by Buffalo Bore is rated at 950fps and the 425 grain is rated at 1350fps. Both loads are about 50 fps faaster in my revolver than the rated speed, for 1000 fps with the 440 and 1375 fps with the 425

When the heart contracts the muscles tend to seal the wound unless a) you used a bullet with a sharp cutting shoulder or meplat, b) there is sufficient hydrostatic pressure to cause an explosive wound or c) you have used a good soft point that has mashed a big ragged hole. I stoped using solids on buff years ago when I saw how long they could stay on their feet for with a hole in their hearts!

The PH proficiency exam starts in a weeks time- I'll try and get some photo's of buff hearts from that.

I probably screwed up the rated velocities, and, I'm not sure which gun was used. Jack's pictures. Last time I shot these was out of a snubby 500 SRH, and, I think they went 1050 out of the 2 inch barrel, and 1300 fps, out of the David Clay short barreled rifle 1100 or 1150, and 1350 fps, as you said. We were close to the chrono, so, my recollection, and readings might be off. Sorry, my fault on the velocities. Have to check again.
